Forget the semi – detached houses, the quaint cottage, the humble bungalow, and any other fixed abode that most of us call ‘Home’

I recently came across an article and a fascinating story of an 87 year old lady, who refers to the 6* Crystal Serenity Cruise Ship as ‘Home’ . I found myself in awe of this lady, who has resided on board for the past 8 years, and has visited some of the most exotic, and beautiful countries and destinations around the world!

After losing her husband back in 1997, she now lives everyday by words her husband quoted to her, before he passed away “Don’t Stop Cruising”

During their 50 year marriage, the couple set sail on no fewer than 89 cruises around the world

Turning 88 in May, she has called the 12 year old luxury cruise ship her home, and in turn, has seen crew members come and go, and has been on board longer than almost all of the 655 various members of crew

She regularly enjoys cocktails with the Captain, and is often given the honour and award of being the guest with the greatest number of Crystal Cruises, which isn’t surprising as she can proudly boast 400 cruises altogether, with 15 of these being World cruises

After sailing around the World, and visiting most of the ports of call, some up to several times, she now rarely steps ashore, instead she remains on board, soaking up the quietness of the ship, whilst the vast majority of passengers disembark to experience the port they are docked in. Her days are filled with reading, taking in a movie, and just some general rest and relaxation

Taking in a book – This is not the actual lady!

She regularly engages with her three sons and seven grandchildren, via her laptop, almost everyday, and when in the Port of Miami, she visits them personally

Being a long standing resident on board, she is regularly showered with beautiful flowers and various floral arrangements, and is sometimes allocated on board spending money. The average daily cost to reside on this luxury cruise ship is around £315.00, yet seems to offer her complete happiness combined with luxurious surroundings, fantastic dining experiences, and above all seeing the World

A favourite pastime of hers, is needlework, which she has continued for almost 50 years, and in turn regularly shows, and teaches other guests on board, the crew on board are regularly rewarded with her completed handicrafts

Dining for her is a group gathering, as she enjoys to dine with fellow guests on a table seating up to eight guests at a time, and over the years she has met a vast array of guests from different nationalities and cultures, who themselves are on board to experience the luxurious cruising experience

Mouth Watering dishes!

I salute this lady! She is experiencing the world in a way that I myself, and probably the vast majority of people can only dream about!

With the need to excite, educate and offer a diverse and unique way to holiday, it was estimated that around two million kids younger than the age of fifteen experienced cruising in 2016 on cruise lines that are members of the Cruise Lines International Association Industry. In order to attract first time family cruisers,  and ensure they want to return year after year, whilst continuing to keep such a high number of children and families, happy and fulfilled, whilst engaging them in a fun, and exciting way to holiday, the cruise lines offer and continue to improve family facilities, such as well known film and cartoon characters on board, water parks with bigger and better slides, normally known to those of a land based water park, zip lines running through the centre of the ship, for a more adrenaline fuelled experience, whilst on board surf simulators offer a surf experience, plus much more…

Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises offer a fantastic approach to family cruising. Each cruise line offering differences, such as signature and unique features, tailored to suit the need of families.

Armed with brochures, online information, and cruising tips from experienced family cruisers, I’ve explored the following points to ensure that every member of the family is catered for by cruise line.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International, are a great way to cruise as a family with younger children, up to teens aswell as catering for the modern multigenerational families. Many of the Royal Caribbean fleet offer an extensive range of activities and entertainment options, aimed at families, ranging from fantastic pools, hot tubs, and on board 3D theatres,  high scaling rock-climbing walls, on board ice-skating rinks, to SeaPlex, the on board space offering roller discos, dodgem cars, and the chance to play basketball. Those in search of adrenaline, Royal Caribbean International offer FlowRider, a surf simulator and a thrilling zip line ride across an open-air atrium which is suspended nine decks high! A more recent feature to Royal Caribbean’s ships is the North Star, a jewel shaped pod rising above the sea, offering all round views of the sea and surrounding land.

Flowrider – Surf Simulator

Royal Caribbean offer a wide choice of staterooms suited to families, with staterooms designed to accommodate varying family sizes, all offering 24 hour room service, for a nominal charge. Ships within the fleet offer indoor promenades, featuring live parades and special shows and events. Facilities for both parents and grandparents alike, include the adult-only on board Solariums and the extensive choice of dining and evening entertainment options. Children’s clubs, and evening nursery care is offered, providing late night fun for the children, whilst a baby sitting service is offered in the staterooms, for a charge.

Adventure Ocean – The Youth and Teen programme currently offered by Royal Caribbean divides kids into age structured groups – Aquanauts for ages 3 to 5, offers story time groups and pyjama nights. Explorers  for ages 6 to 8 years offers fun and interactive science lessons, and various talent themed groups, whilst Voyagers for ages 9 to 11, offers activities such as science in the Environmentation Station, and a Girls vs Boys night.

Ages 12 to 14 are well catered for in the programme suited to ‘tweens’, where they can take part in arcade challenges and rock – climbing competitions, and pool parties in the evenings, whilst the oldest members of the group, for ages 15 to 17 years, have their own chill out spaces, or for the active teens, sports and dance competitions.

The Royal Babies and Royal Tots nursery programs provide a colourful surrounding, featuring interactive activities for the smallest cruisers, aged 6 to 36 months. A day time and evening drop off service is available, subject to availability

Royal Caribbean International launches Quantum of the Seas, the newest ship in the fleet, in November 2014 Children's play area.
Royal Babies and Royal Tots

Another exclusive feature to Royal Caribbean is the chance for little ones to meet and a photo taken with their favourite DreamWorks character including the infamous Shrek and Fiona, and Madagascar’s very own Alex and the penguins. The character breakfast option is a must, with a  DreamWorks character making a tableside visit to the family whilst dining, a cover charge of $10.00 is applicable to guests aged 6 years and over for the character breakfast option.

DreamWorks Character Dining

The latest DreamWorks films are on board, with same day release as they are on land, and are brought to life in the 3D theatre, or in staterooms.

3D Theatre

Royal Caribbean offers dozens of dining options, from Johnny Rockets, sampling burgers and shakes – a favourite with families, to pizza’s served in Sorrento’s. A special feature with Royal Caribbean is the offering of the My Family Time Dining on board selected sailings, in the main dining room for the earliest dining time – this varies by ship and sailing, and Service Charges / tips are not mandatory to be pre paid for this option. This gives guests between the ages of 3 and 11 years, to be transferred to Adventure Ocean to engage in various activities, whilst mum and dad, enjoy a dining experience by themselves.

Family Dining

Royal Caribbean  are offering various cruise itineraries for 2018, with sailings departing from Southampton, with no flying involved, you can simply park your car at the port, embark and sail away, cutting out the stresses that the whole airport experience might bring for families.

The larger staterooms, perfect for families always sell out fast, so be sure to book early!
