Marcias Cruise And Travel

Hi I’m Marcia and I’m here to share all things on cruise and travel. Holidays are my life and I love to share my experiences and hear of others. I’ve worked in travel for almost 10 years now, and still love helping people find their dream holiday. As you may know if you’ve reads my previous blogs I have a little passion for Norway and the hunt for the Aurora Borealis, I blame it all on my mother, what started out as her dream has now become a passion for us both and once was never enough. Italy is another of my favourite countries, I’ve never had a bad trip there, in fact I don’t think there’s anywhere I’ve been to that I haven’t enjoyed, and I’ve been travelling since I was a baby, living in India for the first year of my life, not that I can remember that of course. My motto is enjoy yourself your on holiday and make the best of every opportunity, and once it’s over look forward to your next one, which is where we come in

Over the last 6 months if not more I have noticed a huge demand in the popularity of a P&O cruise. Whether it’s the conveniency of skipping airports and sailing from Southampton, not having to worry about a fluctuating exchange rate as prices are all in GBP, or the security of knowing that you are sailing on a British cruise line, bookings on P&O cruises are increasing by the day

One thing I do get asked a lot from new cruises is what their ships are like, with 8 ships in their fleet each one offers something special

P&O oriana

For the adults amongst you let’s begin with the 3 adult only ships, something which is extremely popular with all ages who want to get away from it all without having to worry about children running around

Firstly the Arcadia a mid sized ship carrying 2094 passengers. This is a classic P&O vessel described as a combination of chic and classic cruising. She offers stylish décor with a relaxed feel so your holiday really is all about the sail and the destinations.

Unique features include exterior glass fronted lifts and an extensive onboard art collection with over 3000 pieces of art. The highly acclaimed chef Atul Kucher also has one of his restuarants Sindhu onboard for those special occasions when you feel you deserve a treat.

P&O arcadia sindhu_food_montage

Arcadia spends most of her Winters on her world cruise itinerary and Summers in Europe

Oriana has only recently been transformed into an adult only ship, a favourite with P&O passengers this seemed like the natural step and has just had a refit to improve the elegant atmosphere onboard. One of P&O’s smaller ships at 1880 passengers guests enjoy the friendliness of meeting fellow passengers and crew and seeing them on a regular basis, this is where firm friendships form.

Classic features of Oriana is by far her teak decks and tiered stern with a touch of an art deco feel, along side an open atrium with Tiffany glass ceiling and panoramic Crows nest bar.

P&O oriana dining

As a smaller sized vessel she can travel to destinations that others can’t which is why many loyal guests love this ship to always explore somewhere new.

Adonia has just been brought back into P&O’s fleet this year due to high demand, the smallest ship carrying 710 passengers she has a very intimate homely feel.

I would say these ships cater for seasoned cruisers who want to experience something new, for example you can sail down the Amazon which is a first for P&O, or sail around smaller Caribbean ports that you can’t reach on a larger ship.

P&O Adonia atrium

Adonia has a more traditional feel to her like old style cruising in a modern way, she has a grand staircase with wood panelling in the Atrium, but following a recent refit lighter furnishings have been used to give a brighter more modern feel.

As you all know I’m interested in anything relating to Norway as it’s one of my favourite countries, so as you can imagine I was very intrigued to read that they have announced that they are planning to build a tunnel through the fjords to cater for cruise ships and other sailing vessels

As the weather in winter can be exceptional, with roads difficult to navigate and seas difficult to sail through, the Stad Peninsula is one of the most dangerous and exposed coastlines in the country, situated on the Selje muncipality in the Northwestern part of Sogn og Fjordane county in Norway. It is classed as the meeting place between the Norwegian and North Sea, and this is where they would build the tunnel

The Norwegian Coastal Agency department have proposed to build a tunnel through a fjord, to enable ships a safer crossing and cut time, why sail around wild waters when you can cut through. The proposed build could begin towards the end of 2018-early 2019 lasting over 4 years, and cost an approximate £94 million. This is some feat as it would require knocking through 7.5million tonnes of rock. Once complete the tunnel would be almost 150ft tall and 118ft wide and a mile long, enabling even the largest Hurtigruten cruise ships to fit through amongst others.

Many tests have been carried out to see which part of the peninsular would be the most suitable for such a build and studies have showed that this final route has been selected because the Stad Peninsula is at its narrowest point here, and the waters are sufficiently sheltered to allow ships to use the tunnel in any weather conditions

Here is a video released by the Agency

The aim of the project is to improve accessibility and safety for shipping and once completed will become the worlds first tunnel built for shipping

Having been to Norway numerous times by both land and sea, I have seen how unpredictable the weather can be and if there are ways of improving shipping, not just for passengers but for locals and transporting freight as well I think this is a great idea, and would certainly put Norway on the map for leaders of innovation

Let me know your thoughts

Cruise and Maritime cruise lines have announced a Vegan only sailing becoming the first ocean cruise line to offer a cruise catering solely for Vegan dietary requirements.

I think this is a fantastic idea as my Aunty is Vegan and always used to struggle when eating out in the UK or on holiday, however over the last few years more and more restaurants are offering vegetarian and vegan options on their menu’s and more so in larger cities, specialized restaurants are opening, I myself have dined in one and the food was fantastic, there are so many more options available now than there used to be so why not trial a whole cruise itinerary. With people becoming more health conscious, certain dietary requirements or for their beliefs in eating meat and dairy, it seems that the word is out and veganism is here to stay.

The sailing on their brand new flagship CMV Colombus will sail from Tilbury around the Norwegian Fjords on 25th September for 7 nights stopping at Eidfjord, Flam, Geiranger and Bergen, whilst also cruising down the many fjords of Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord

All food will be 100% Vegan, there will also feature a full wellness programme including Yoga & Pilates, plus vegan toothpaste making and vegan cheese making which sounds interesting.

There will be a number of guest speakers onboard too including:

Wendy Turner Webster, Tv presenter known for Pet rescue and Absolutely animals

Michael Gregor, a physician and New York Times bestselling author, and internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues.

Melanie Joy, a Harvard-educated psychologist, celebrated speaker and author of the award-winning book Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows

Julieanna Hever,  known as The Plant-Based Dietitian, and of the miracles associated with following a whole food, plant-based diet

Prices are starting from only £669p/p but availability is already fairly limited so don’t hesitate to contact me if this is for you, my email is or call me 0161 798 2516

Princess cruises latest announcement shows that cruisers are becoming much more adventurous and looking for new and exciting destinations when it comes to choosing their cruise destination, it seems people’s aspirations are changing, instead of a quick 7 night cruise around the Mediterranean and relaxing onboard, the new focus is becoming where in the world can they explore and slowly tick off what’s on their bucket list.

Over the last few years Far East and Asia passenger numbers have grown rapidly, with many cruise lines placing their newest ships in this area. Princess cruises have just announced that they will feature Japan quite heavily for 2018 with its longest ever season, there will be a staggering 63 voyages between 4 and 23 nights and running from April through December 2018 onboard the Diamond Princess.

There will be 38 destinations in 7 countries with the itineraries starting in either Tokyo or Kobe, with many new itineraries and options of adding a cruise tour on selected sailings. There will also be a number of first time ports including Ishinomaki, Iwakuni, Niigata, Sakata, Toba and Yokkaichi, along with visits to more familiar Asian countries including South Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Vietnam.

Here is an insight into what you can expect

Festivals and Special Events

The 13th April features a Spring Flowers voyage, where you can visit Japan’s largest Tulip Fair, and Kenrokuen Gardens in Kanazawa, known as one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens for its iconic cherry blossom trees.

For Japan’s summer festivals cruise (27th July) you can visit the Aomori Nebuta and Akita Kanto festivals, with late night stays in port to make the most of your visit, so no need to rush back to the ship. The Aomori Nebuta Festival is also called the Fire festival, it features daily parades of enormous lantern floats, flanked by large taiko drums, musicians and dancers. The Akita Kanto features a procession of 200 Kantos (bamboo poles) carried on the palms, foreheads and shoulders of the performers and not to be missed

The brand new Six Fall Foliage voyages will take place during Japan’s peak autumn season departing in early October and November, taking passengers to the regions of Japan that are famous for their changing autumn colours of the Japanese maple and Ginkgo trees, including Kyoto (Osaka) and Momijidani Park in Iwakuniinkgo

Unesco World Heritage Sites

These cruises will feature  12 Unesco World Cruise Heritage Sites, including the historic temples and shrines of Kyoto and Nara, Mt. Fuji, and the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima.

Japan Cruisetours

Princess will offer two cruise tour options to explore Kyoto and Tokyo. The ‘Highlights of Japan’ cruise tour includes the main sights of Kyoto, which used to be the Capital of Japan, and bustling city of Tokyo, Nijo-jo Castle, Kinkaku-ji Temple and the popular Japanese gardens. After visiting Tokyo, guests will visit Togendai, Lake Ashi and the spectacular Mt. Fuji.

The ‘Temples & Traditions’ of Japan tour is an extended version of the above highlights tour but with two extra nights in another Unesco city, Kanazawa, this is a creative city of Crafts and Folk art. The area is rich with Japanese culture and tradition where you can visit Higashi Chaya, an iconic Geisha district and the Nomura Samurai House, an old warrior house from 1843. Passengers can also experience first hand Washi paper-making and sushi-making

Princess have also recently won an award for the best cruise line in Asia, perhaps this is down to cultural tweaks that they make onboard to make a cruise more authentic. The Diamond Princess will now feature a selection of Japanese food onboard including sushi, karaoke and folklore dancing will feature in the evening, have a go at origami on a sea day or join in Rakugo, a 400-year-old tradition of comic storytelling or if you want to relax the ship has the largest Japanese bath of its kind at sea

My Christmas starts when the Christmas markets open, it’s a family tradition for as long as I can remember, so a few years ago we decided to branch out take in my family’s European roots and visit a ‘real’ German Christmas market instead of just staying in Manchester.

It’s so hard to choose where to go as every city offers something different, then deciding which country, over the years the magic of Christmas markets has grown so much that not only is there Germany, but Austria, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland even Scandinavia and Spain

Eventually we decided on Cologne, wow what an experience. The city offers everything you could ask for, a total of 8 different markets, the most spectacular infront of the Dom (Cathedral), there is shopping galore, try a typical German beer in a Beerhaus or you can take a short river cruises for the afternoon. There is so much to see and do that if you do get ‘marketed’ out there is so much more sightseeing to do

Bruges, Zurich, Vienna, Budapest followed, all offering something different, from the variety of local food, to handicrafts and decorations all typical of the countries traditions. The main focus of a Christmas market for us is the Bratwurst, a spicy typical German sausage and of course the Gluwein, mulled wine as we know it in the UK, a hot flavoursome red wine, but in each country and even city you can never get the same, each city has its own recipes. This year I have just returned from Nuremberg the home of the Bratwurst, each stall has a disclaimer for their own families recipe which is still made in traditional way, funnily enough these are much smaller than what you usually find and they say its so they don’t have to compromise on ingredients, taste and price

I love this type of holiday it makes me feel so Christmassy and the smaller towns are so pretty, there is always an old quarter that is picture perfect. If this sounds like your kind of holiday too then I could think of nothing better than to try a River cruise, one is definately on my bucket list. These usually start or end in Nuremberg, Vienna, Budapest or Cologne depending on if you choose the Danube or the Rhine. Sometimes you can end up walking the same routes everyday so to try a different city in one holiday really appeals to me, plus you get to sample the scenery along the way, my goal is to spot these fairytale castles up in the hills that I’m always seeing photos of. Another advantage is it can save you lots of time, no matter how long I spend researching hotels I always seem to be in the wrong area and miles from the centre, a river cruise docks in the heart of the town so don’t need to worry about getting lost. Plus most include a variety of shore excursions and walking tours. If you add in your entertainment and food onboard they are very good value, plus there is always a bit of room for a gluwein and a cake (a tip for any cake lovers out there be sure to include Vienna in your trip. I think my mum made me visit every cake/coffee shop there)

You can also take a at any time of year, I’m sure Summer is a lovely time to visit when everything is green and the sun shines, but for me December is the most magical time to visit Europe, the buzz of the markets, the lights, children singing carols, and the smells of wine and spices in the air

If anyone would be interested or would like to share their own experiences please don’t hesitate to get in touch I would love to help you book your perfect winter break

For any last minute Christmas ideas I have the perfect solution for you. We at Cruise Club UK have just sent out our latest Christmas brochures featuring so many offers, for the first time ever we have split them into 3 separate brochures to make them easier to read to our passengers, our general mixed mailer, Prestige featuring 5/6* cruise lines and our popular Tour & Cruise progamme.

One of the most exciting is our Prestige mailer featuring a wide selection of our best offers from Azamara, Oceania, and Regent cruise lines just to name a few

We have packaged some fantastic itineraries with Oceania and for 2018 they have some brilliant early booking adminoffers, but they are ending soon. If you can book before 31st December you can take advantage of 50% off deposits, up to $400 onboard credit per stateroom, this is in addition to the O’Life promotions that feature on most 2017/18 sailings.  For those that aren’t aware or are first time cruisers with Oceania, you can choose between either free shore excursions, free house drinks package or onboard credit of up to $300p/p, and on selected sailings they are even including free gratuities, so your cruise could be fully all inclusive, imagine not having a huge bill at the end of your holiday, or having the onboard credit to treat yourself to something different, the speciality restaurants onboard Oceania’s ships are in a league of their own, I’ve been told people sail with them just to eat here. Or perhaps there’s an excursion you wouldn’t normally do, visiting somewhere different can take your holiday to another level. Or one for the ladies here you could spend your day indulging in the Spa onboard on a sea day.

We have featured 4 Mediterranean itineraries in our brochure but we aim for the most competitive price on all sailings

For some winter sunshine head to the Canaries in April on the Riviera. Sailing from Barcelona we have prices starting from £2189p/p for 12 nights

Scandinavia has grown in popularity in the last few years so experience the marvel of St Petersberg with 2 nights onboard the ship on Medieval Marvels, 10 nights from only £2299p/p

One of my favourite itineraries the Adriatic and Greek islands, visit some of the most picturesque ports in the Mediterranean on Nautica in November, from Venice to Athens visiting Italy, Croatia and Greece, you can book an inside stateroom for £1699p/p

If you are looking to try Oceania for the first time and don’t want to spend too much, or just looking for an extra holiday this is our best offer yet, 7 nights from Barcelona on the Nautica around the Western Med with prices starting at £1319p/p. With everything that’s included this is a true bargain and not one to miss out on
