Hello All! I’m Laura, but you can call me Miss B, my blog is called Miss B’s High Seas, I’ve been working in the travel industry for 22 years (WOW that’s gone fast!). I have a great extensive knowledge of many destinations both to do with cruise & other travel too. But my real passion is Australia & New Zealand I absolutely love everything about these places! I must admit cruising is one of the best ways to see lots of amazing destinations in complete relaxed luxury, My favourite cruise line is Norwegian Cruise Line, as their relaxed atmosphere suits me down to the ground. So stay tuned to my blog for some great first hand experience and my opinions, reviews & other cool bits! Ciao for now! Miss B!

It’s plan a cruise month this October 2017. Each week will have a different destination theme, week 1 is Europe, so please read on and discover Cruise Club UK’s top cruise tips, including staff top tips too.

For those who are yet to cruise it can be a challenge on where to start looking and what suits your needs. Here we aim to provide you with the best tips to get the most out of your dream cruise:

shutterstock_555335236

Look for cruises with overnight in port or late departures, giving you more time to explore

7 night itineraries are destination heavy, if you want some quality days at sea to experience the ship look for 12-14 night itineraries

Spas are at their busiest on sea days, look out for discount deals on port days

Be prepared to leave your cabin early, even if your transfer is hours later – your cabin steward has to prepare for the next guest arriving by lunch time!

Holiday insurance is a must – whilst most ships have hospitals, doctors and nurses onboard medical bills can soon add up in case of illness or an accident

Most river cruises don’t feature a formal night, so leave your fancy clothes at home!

shutterstock_260095259

Sunbed policies vary between cruise lines, some have a 30 minute rule – leave unattended and your items will be removed from the bed and held for you

Research your port of calls, ie Ephesus and Olympia are best visited on an organised excursion, due to the long coach journey from the port, plus you get an experienced guide included

TOP TIPS:

Santorini has a great bus service which is cheap and makes it easy to explore. Rhodes town is very close to the port, easy for a wander round

If you have already visited a destination, try a secondary city. For example Barcelona – try a day trip to Sitges with its fabulous beach and street lined cafes

shutterstock_526676119

STAFF TOP DESTINATION TIP:

Kotor, Montenegro – The sail into the port is stunning, it takes about an hour from the Adriatic Sea through the fjord like surroundings. It’s definitely worth getting up early to witness. Once in the UNESCO town of Kotor explore the well preserved medival town.

WARNING: Spanish IVA (VAT) of 10% is charged while in Spanish ports or Spanish waters

And remember when sailing in EU waters you mobile data is now included at no extra cost!

Fresh from our day aboard Holland America Lines Zuiderdam in Liverpool on Saturday 5th August 2017.

This was my first visit onboard a Holland America ship and upon arrival i was surprised to learn that the guest capacity is less than 2,000 as the ship looked like it could accommodate more. Having said that I found everywhere to be spacious.

From the moment we walked on every staff member we passed welcomed us and said good morning, a small gesture that goes along way!

outdoor pool

The wide teak decks give it a traditional look, with ample sunbeds and space surrounding the pool area at the aft of the ship. Plus you have a short walk to the Lido Market which provides casual dining for breakfast, lunch or dinner, all with a panoramic view out to sea. The different themed stations were easy to locate. My favourite was the pre made scrumptious sandwiches, ideal for on the go.

Explorations Café – powered by the New York Times is the place to get cakes and coffees, with plenty of book and table games to enjoy. Next door is the Crow’s Nest bar with panoramic views out to sea.

The other pool onboard has a sliding roof to accommodate the ever changing weather. This is where Dive In is located – offering grilled burgers or hot dogs

Dining venues

pinnavcle

The Pinnacle Grill had an amazing interior, from the quirky ceiling to the glass art work around the walls.

mainmeal

We were fortunate enough to enjoy a 4 course meal onboard:

Starter

Soup

Main

Desert

desert

I’m not a fussy eater and found everything very satisfying. Plates were more than hot, service was excellent and of course the desert was devine.

If you’re looking for quality dining and the added touch the staff bring to your sailing then this is the cruise line for you. Especially if you like live music. Holland America Line won’t disappoint.

Update coming November 2017, adding music venues and more

How it works:

Take the MasterChef At Sea Quiz, if you win you then take part in the cooking competition, the mystery box challenge (my favourite part of the show). The MSC panel of judges will then rate your dish on presentation, taste and the originality of your recipe.

Majestic Princess will be sailing out of Sydney from September 2018 to March 2019, giving you the chance to see epic landscapes, colourful cultures and the laid back charm this fascinating destination has to offer.

Whether it’s your first time visiting the land down under or you have been lucky enough to experience its many awe inspiring attractions, Australia remains as popular as ever within the UK market.

Most people book a few nights hotel stay before their cruise from Sydney, however did you know that Princess Cruises offer two Cruisetours? These can be added on pre or post cruise and are fantastic value with amazing experiences.

I recently visited Caribbean Princess in Liverpool for the day (as us Travel Agents do), the Princess reps advised us that Princess Cruises are fat feeders………. They weren’t wrong. From 11am to 3pm we enjoyed coffee and pastries, pizza, homemade lemonade then a 3 course meal! Their choice of dining is off the scale and there is something for everyone no matter what allergies, diet are.

Obviously you control what you eat when you’re away and on a cruise they do say you gain 1lb a day. With so many dining options onboard Princess Cruises I wanted to highlight your choices and recommend favourite dining venues from personal experience:

Included in the cost of your cruise:

24hour-international-cafe

The International Café – Located in one of the best areas, the Piazza. This place is 24 hours and serves daily soups, Paninis, salads, freshly baked cookies (a must), cakes and a variety of speciality coffees, teas and more. The perfect place to people watch, or if you’re an early riser or struggle sleeping this is the best place to be.

alfredos-pizza

Alfreso’s Pizzeria – made to order gourmet pizzas. The open kitchen means you can watch your personal pizza being created.

anytime-traditional-dining

Fine dining with two great dining choices on offer:

Anytime Dining – Dine anytime from 530pm to 10pm. Choose a table size for your party or join a group the next time. The choice is yours. I’d recommend to book this option at the time of booking as they only allocate so many passengers this dining choice. Perfect for those who like to plan their daily activities given you ample to freshen up ready for some fine food!

The other choice is traditional dining, set times of 630pm & 830pm, dine at the same table each evening with the same wait staff throughout your cruise, a great way to meet new people and share stories

horizon-court-buffett

Daytime dining is just as good up on open deck, choose from the burger & hotdog grill, a slice or two of freshly made pizza (American style size), soft serve chocolate or vanilla ice cream or the Horizon Court buffet which offers a casual setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Speciality Restaurants with Princess vary from ship to ship, from Share by Curtis Stone to Sabatini’s Italian.

crown grill

By far the most popular and a firm favourite is the Crown Grill – serving cooked to order steaks and premium seafood. A great atmosphere and you can enjoy drinks at the bar after dining. How about Ultimate balcony dining? Perfect for a luxurious breakfast or romantic dinner at sea.

If you still have room for more how about popcorn whilst watching a hit film poolside with Movies Under the Stars.

Whichever dining venue you choose with Princess Cruises you won’t be disappointed!

Cruises are becoming more and more popular and as the industry grows the expectation of quirky new concepts are eagerly awaited by cruise fans. The bigger the ship the more exciting facilities they offer once onboard.

Is bigger always better?

Customers choose their cruises based on various aspects:

shutterstock_76406011

Price – Cruising with a family can be expensive, with school holiday sailings always the dearest. Cruise Lines always have promotions on so booking early isn’t always going to get you the best deal. The most popular time to book is after Christmas and into January, this is when the cruise lines all offer competitive promotions. Working within the cruise industry we know and see the daily trends, for example we’re in July at the moment and most of the cruise lines have already sold their cabin capacity for 2017 sailings and put their focus on 2018 sailings, offering enticing promotions.

shutterstock_562794124

Itinerary – For me this is the reason I would book a cruise. I’ve been fortunate enough to see a lot of worldwide destinations, so for me choosing somewhere I haven’t seen would be my first choice, followed by price and then dining options. Things you need to consider are:

Fly cruise or sail from the UK?

If you choose to sail from the UK please bear in mind that only having 7 days holiday won’t get you to the Canary Islands as these tend to be longer durations due to distance.

What is your maximum flight time?

There’s no point in looking at sailing from Singapore for example if you only want to fly for a maximum of 7 hours. These are questions our experienced sales team would ask you if you didn’t have anything specific in mind.

141101_1015 CL_VS_Skyride_5302

Facilities – If you’re travelling with kids then a good waterpark and kidsclubs are important. That way the kids can choose to join in with other kids in the clubs or spend quality family time together doing fun family friendly activities. On the larger ships kids will be spoilt for choice, from zipwire, super slides, dodgems, minigolf, cinema, the list is endless.

Food – Who doesn’t love the simplicity of a good buffet restaurant onboard?

Choose what you want, go back for more! I recently sailed onboard the new Majestic Princess and within the buffet area they had a fresh bakery which proved very popular especially the cookies!

A lot of the larger cruise lines offer quirky dining venues, from Alice in Wonderland themed dining to celebrity/Michelin chef’s venues onboard. Most of these would incur a surcharge to dine in, but for me it’s worth the money just to experience something a little different. Plus if you’re open to sampling something different on your palate then why not!

shutterstock_126191144

Cruise Line – We all have those friends who went somewhere on holiday, they hated it and you loved it. That’s because not everyone’s tastes are the same and if they were, would it not make our world dull? Most customers go off personal experience or recommendations from friends and family. A great example here is Carnival Cruise Lines, they advertise as fun ships and have a huge American following. That personally put me off straight away, however when I sailed onboard Carnival Vista last year I have to say it’s my favourite ship so far! I had preconceived ideas that this was a party young ship with pool activities all day long. How wrong was I! There was a good mix of nationalities, a great mix of speciality dining and my favourite was the lobby area of an evening with live music.

Cruising is big news and more and more people are choosing to cruise because of the multi destinations and variety of facilities. With over 40 new ships on order by 2026 you won’t be stuck for choice either.
