Cruise Holidays

… the kids go back to school, the football season is back and World Cruise Itineraries are announced for the following year. I love looking at the new itineraries that cruise lines come up with and always like to choose which one I would do if I could get the time off work.

P&O have announced their World Cruise program for 2017 which this year will see only 2 ships, Arcadia and Aurora doing full world voyages and then Oriana doing a half world cruise.

And as this year will be marking 180 years since the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was formed, Aurora’s 2017 World Circumnavigation features a special heritage-themed itinerary. She will depart from Southampton on 9th January 2017, her 104 night voyage will take her along the trade routes of the British Empire, calling at 35 destinations over a distance of 30,000 nautical miles. There will be 23 new ports of call and she will transit both the Suez and Panama Canals.

Arcadia will sail for 114 nights on 22nd January 2017 with 22 new ports, compared to her cruise of 2016 and she will also transit the Panama and Suez Canals on her journey. She has it all, from sun-soaked beaches and breathtaking natural wonders, to ancient culture and sophisticated city life. Whether its splashing about in the South Pacific or watching elephants splash each other in Sri Lanka, this trip will be filled with unforgettable moments. Take in the Bay of San Francisco under its iconic Golden Gate Bridge. marvel at the dazzling neon-lit skyline of Hong Kong or relax on a beach in Bora Bora, you can do it all on this voyage of a lifetime.

The half world cruise on Oriana, however will be doing something completely different. Departing 3rd January she will sail for 50 nights to the Caribbean and Amazon. Highlights will involve Key West’s dazzling pink sunset, the lively jazz joints of The Big Easy, picture-perfect Caribbean beaches and the spectacular Amazon rain forest. Here, you will bid a temporary farewell to the open ocean and adventure over 1000 miles along the Amazon River, bound for the city of Manaus.

And if you can’t go for the full duration, P&O have several different ways for you to take in part of the voyage, whether it’s for 18 nights, 28 nights or 48 nights there really is an itinerary there for everyone.

These cruises will go on sale on 9th September 2015 and you can register you interest today by e-mailing me – jon@cruiseclubuk.com

Pretty much all cruise lines operate in the same way with regards to the Dining arrangements on board a cruise ship. However, there are some that like to be different. Here I explain how…

Seasoned cruisers will be aware of dining arrangements on board cruise ships, whereas it can be quite confusing to passengers who are new to cruise, or not used to certain arrangements. With the arrival of newer, more modern cruise ships, we have seen new ways of dining being introduced.

shutterstock_155974052

The traditional way of dining would offer two set times for passengers to dine. These are usually 6pm and 8.30pm. There are different names for these dining times. 6pm could be known as: First Sitting, Early Sitting or Main Sitting whereas 8.30pm could be known as: Second Sitting or Late Sitting.

If you are to choose a traditional dining time, this means you will have your evening meal in the main restaurant at this time, each day of your cruise. You will also be seated at the same table each evening, with the same other passengers. This is a brilliant way to meet fellow passengers on board.

Some cruise lines now offer another dining option, in addition to the Traditional times, which is commonly know as ‘Anytime’ dining. This can also be known as Open Dining, Select Dining and MyTimeDining. If you are to choose this option, it is just as it sounds. You can dine in the Main restaurant anytime you like, between the opening hours.

‘Anytime’ dining does not guarantee you the same table or table size. You could be seated with different guests each night. If you are someone who prefers a small table for 2, keep in mind you may well receive a large table for 10, and vice versa.

Most passengers will be thinking, why doesn’t everybody do Anytime dining? This is because most people like to have the same table with the same guests each evening, and know they will be eating at that time. It is possible to have to wait for a table for some time when on the anytime dining option, as one may not be available when you arrive at the dining room.

There are some cruise lines that offer Anytime dining only – no traditional set times.

Welcome to part 1 of my newest series of blog posts Cruise Norway .

With the Northern European cruise season now in full swing it brought back happy memories of  when I cruised with Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas on a Norway and Arctic circle cruise. Over the last few years Northern Europe has become increasingly popular with cruisers, whether its Norway, Iceland or the Baltics, however some are still dubious on what to expect. Before I went I spent hours online researching the cruise, ports, weather, everything so here’s my quick guide from my own experience.

It ended up being a little long so not wanting to miss anything out I thought I’d split it into 2 parts so happy reading

The biggest surprise was the weather and this is what mainly puts people off as they just think its really cold. I went in June maybe I was lucky but the last few days we were up on deck sunbathing and it got to 21 degrees. The beginning of the cruise was about 12-16 degrees but once the sun came out it felt pretty warm and you didn’t need a jacket. Although it was freezing on the ship as we headed North, very windy but sailing back down was much more pleasant and I have my lovely pink Royal Caribbean fleece as a souvenir

Here’s a brief overview of all the ports I visited

Alesund

DSC00122

Was a lovely little place. You can easily walk off the ship so no real need to book an excursion. They offer hop on hop off buses (approx. £20) and also a little tourist train, some areas are quite spread out so may be worth doing the bus if you aren’t too good at walking. Mainly if you want to go up Mount Aksla its 418 steps!!! Well worth it though for the views and there’s a little café at the top. Taxi cost us about £15 to go up then we walked back down. To the left of the port head left and you have the old part, very pretty, multi-coloured buildings running along a canal, with an old wooden church, all in art nouveau architecture

Arctic

Royal Caribbean made an occasion out of crossing the Arctic circle, they even give you a certificate and paint your nose blue!  They do an initiation ceremony with King Neptune which was a bit daft and really funny. I was told all cruiselines do something to acknowledge the crossing but I suppose it depends on the individual company as to how fun it is

DSC00262DSC00280

The further North you go the lighter the evenings, it was definitely unusual sitting In the Viking lounge at midnight with bright sunshine. There was one day where the sun set at 1.44 and rose at 1.59, but unfortunately that evening was thick with cloud so we couldn’t see anything.

DSC00024

Honningsvag – North Cape

This is a mainly a fishing port, you can walk off ship easily, there’s one main street and the front promenade.

DSC00390

The main attraction is going up to the North Cape, the most Northernmost point of Europe. Its approx. 40mins away, you can take an excursion from the cruise or book the bus from right outside the port, the prices are pretty much the same. We did the bus, they went at 10.15 and 12.00 coming back at 14.00 and 16.00, cost about £49 including entrance (the excursion was about $89). It’s all baron landscape with snow on hills the higher up you go. There’s a monument of a globe at the highest point (there is only the Svalbard Islands separating you and the North pole about 200miles away), visitor centre with a museum, café, restaurant, champagne bar and shop.

This is off a Norwegian website that I found and I think it certainly sums up the atmosphere

When the clouds cover the ocean with a colorful, heavenly carpet, and the Midnight Sun is at its lowest, this is one of the most special places on earth. You do not get further north in mainland Europe – you are at the end of the world

it as a cruise

Here at Cruise Club UK we have now brought back our number one selling Tour & Cruise offers for 2016.

newslist-a-a

The best benefits of doing a Tour & Cruise in my perspective is you have no weight limit for the case so you can pack in as much as you like.

This year we have even more local pick up points as we have added Scottish departures points and a few others dotted around the country.

The best feeling about a Tour & Cruise is once you have loaded your suitcase on to the couch you wont see it again until you check into your hotel or cruise, you can then sit back, relax and take in some of the stunning that Europe has to offer.

Sail from Dover to Calais and then head towards Reims for a one night hotel stay, where after breakfast you will head towards the centre of Reims where you could visit one of the Champagne Houses that Reims has to offer.

After the day in Reims you will then head towards Dijon for another hotel stay, the following morning you will then travel to Avignon which houses the Popes Palace and world heritage site.

We then cross the border into Spain  also known as the wild and rugged coast before reaching our hotel just outside Barcelona.

The next stop will be the cruise for a fantastic 7 nights cruise taking in the sights of Naples, Civitavecchia for Rome, Livorno for Florence & pisa, the famous Cannes and then Palma.

photo (2)

After a relaxing cruise we will leave Barcelona and head towards France where we cross the Milau Viaduct, the worlds tallest bridge in the world, often called the bridge above the clouds. Another hotel stay near Vichy we will leave the  vineyards behind us and make our way to Paris for our last overnight stop.

Unfortunately after breakfast we will make our way to Calais for our onwards journey home.

As you can see from above this a lovely trip to be had.
