Caribbean Cruises

Counting down to my cruise next week I am excited to visit somewhere new, have a little bit of winter sun and try a new cruise line

After so many of our customers have recommended Norwegian cruise lines and hearing so many good reports I’m taking the plunge and giving them a try

ncl dawn

We have a night beforehand staying at La Concha beach resort in the Condado area, a 5* deluxe resort situated right on the beach. A perfect way to begin our holiday and situated equal distance from the airport and Old Town its the ideal combination of making the most of what San Juan has to offer.

The city appears to me in 2 halves, Old town San Juan, which is the main city center with the port, narrow cobbled streets, colourful old buildings, art and Latin life. Condado is located about a 10 minute drive from the old town, this is a beach front promenade area and strikes me as being more touristy, with an abundance of shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and casinos

It will be interesting to see how the island has recovered from the aftermath of the recent hurricanes, from reading it seems that most of the large hotels are almost running as normal now with only a handful still remaining closed.

San Juan is the Capital city on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, it is both an initial embarking port and one of the most popular ports of call for many cruise itineraries. Visiting San Juan offers something for everyone, the long golden beaches, colourful Spanish colonial buildings and La Fortaleza, a huge fortress overlooking the blue ocean, and of course it is the home of rum and Pina coladas so a little sampling will be taking place and a visit to the Barcadi distilery

Carry on and read my next blog to find out where I will be going on my cruise

Quick Facts:

The three islands of Grenada (Grenada the largest, Petite Martinique & Carriacou) are located in the Eastern Caribbean.

Average temperatures range from 24C/75F to 30C/87F

Better known as the ‘Spice Island’ for their exports of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, cocoa and nutmeg.

Grenada’s capital, St George’s has one of the most beautiful horseshoe shaped harbours in the Caribbean. The town is nestled into a hillside dotted with pink tiled roof buildings.

Grenada is doable in a day with plenty of wonders to explore. This Volcanic Island has plenty to offer, from cascading rivers and waterfalls, lush rainforest, sulphur springs and Lake Antoine.

If you want to explore St George’s, the best way is by foot. A great place to start is the popular Market Square which is the heart of Grenada’s commercial centre. The National Museum is one of the oldest structures in St George’s, housing artefacts and a rich collection of Grenada’s history. Christ of The Deep Monument stands in the harbour commemorating the courage of the Grenadian people who saved the lives of passengers onboard an Italian cruise line which caught fire and sank in the harbour in 1961. Other places of interest include the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Parliament Building. For great views head to Fort George, Grenada’s oldest fort and is the centrepiece of St George’s skyline, explore the dark tunnels and climb to the top to see the cannons for a birds-eye view!

TOP TIP: Don’t want to walk? Listen out for the ringing of the bells through the city, this signals the approaching Grenada Discovery Train. Offering sightseeing tours throughout the town of St George and its surrounding areas.

The nearest waterfall is just a short drive from the capital. No need to hike as Annandale Waterfall has a paved path. For those who enjoy something a little more strenuous a pre booked excursion would be ideal to visit other beauty spots on the island.

Experience Grenada’s natural beauty by taking a jeep safari into the rainforest

Beach lovers:

45 white sand beaches

9 black sand beaches

You won’t have to travel too far from the capital, head South West for the most stunning beaches – Grand Anse Beach is considered one of the 10 most beautiful beaches of the world.

TOP TIP: Try the popular locally brewed beer or Rum Punch spiced with lime juice, syrup and grated nutmeg

Pre bookable excursions are available to book through us or MSC, prices start from £32pp based on a half day excursion

The Norwegian Getaway

This week, after years of waiting Rio de Janeiro, home of Christ the Redeemer and Copacabana beach, will finally become the first South American city ever to host the Summer Olympics and strangely enough the first to be held entirely during the host country’s winter season. And they will have a very special guest at the games (no I’m not talking about Pele)

The Norwegian Getaway will be taking a 40 day break from her cruising schedule in the Caribbean to serve as a floating hotel for the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games in Rio.

This type of honor is nothing new for this beautiful ship though,  she also served as the “Bud Light Hotel” in New York during the 2014 NFL Super Bowl.

The 4028 passenger ship will still continue to provide all of its regular services during the Olympics so guests will still be able to dine on board and take full advantage of the ships fantastic facilities and entertainment. The Getaway has 25 dining options including a Teppanyaki restaurant, a sushi bar, Le Bistro – their signature French restaurant and even a Brazilian steakhouse, Moderno Churrascaria.

There is also an on board water park with Free Fall – the fastest waterslide at sea, a sports complex and fully equipped gym and spa so there will be plenty of ways for people to escape the Olympic fever that will be spreading throughout the country.

A Celebrity ship that is! This Friday I will be jetting out of Manchester, bound for Miami for a cruise on Celebrity Reflection for a week in the Caribbean with a couple of nights in Miami before and after my cruise. This will be a trio of ‘firsts’ for me.

  1. I have never been to Miami before so I am really looking forward to seeing what this vibrant city has to offer. South Beach and Little Havana are the two areas I have heard so much about so I can’t wait to see them for myself. shutterstock_48734809South Beach, Miami
  2. I have never cruised with Celebrity before. I do tend to cruise at least once a year and have traveled with P&O, Princess, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean and Costa but after years of customers telling me how good Celebrity are I am finally going to find out for myself.  The Lawn Club on Celebrity Reflection
  3. I have never been to the Caribbean at all, cruise or land holiday. Having worked in travel for many years I have been lucky enough to cruise the Mediterranean, the Adriatic and Greek islands and the Mexican Riviera on the Pacific coast. I have also traveled extensively in the Med, the Far East, Australia and Hawaii so I’m looking forward to seeing how the ports of San Juan, St Thomas and St Maarten compare. Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas

I will be reporting back my experience of all the ship has to offer. From the dining to the spa, the entertainment to the cabins, I really am keen to see as much as possible.

As always, I would love to hear if there is anything you are keen to hear about or see? Are you due to go on board? Any requests please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will see what I can do.

In the meantime if you are interested in a Celebrity Cruise the you can call me to discuss on 0161 798 2520 or e-mail jon@cruiseclubuk.com

The Norwegian Getaway

After my fantastic 4 night cruise on board the Majesty of the Seas (see previous post) I was then taking another cruise out of Miami, for 7 nights, on board the Norwegian Getaway.

This was my first time sailing with Norwegian Cruise Line, so the freestyle cruising was new to me.

The Norwegian Getaway is a beautiful ship  launched in January 2014. Sister ship to the Norwegian Breakaway.

After checking in at the port of Miami, we walked the gangway making our way to the ship. We was greeted by members of the NCL crew smiling, waving and dancing as we embarked. From here I knew this was going to be a fun cruise!

We had the Ultimate Beverage Package for this sailing, which we got full use of. We headed straight to top deck to check out the pools and water slides.

They have a number of activities on board including the Free Fall waterslides. I had to try this… On our first day on board I went on the Free Fall waterslide as there was no line and I knew with nearly 4000 people on board, there was going to be big lines for these slides. I was right…..

They have the sports complex on deck 17 which includes mini golf, basket ball, ping pong tables and the largest ropes course at sea. Here you will also find the very scary plank that protrudes out the side of the ship, hanging 17 decks above sea level – I did not do this! Not only did this seem very scary to me, I also didn’t have the correct shoes. you must take trainers with you if you wish to partake in the ropes course.

The first two days of our cruise were sea days. If you want to get a sunbed on board this ship, or a place by the pool, you MUST be up as early as possible. Getting to top deck at 10:30 to 11am is too late and it is nearly impossible to find a place to sit. Trust me! We managed to find two beds at the back of the ship in the shade.

The pool on board is absolutely tiny for such a large ship. I didn’t get a chance to go in the pool once, it was just that busy. Most days I found going to the back of the ship (which is adult only) was my best chance of getting a sunbed. Here is called Spice H20. This is also the ‘nicer’ sun bathing part of the ship. They have a cold waterfall where you can sit and cool down and they also have a large cinema screen here where they show movies, global sports and music.

By day the spice H20 is a relaxing sunbathing area and by night it becomes a late night outdoor Miami style nightclub.

The food on board was most probably the best food I have yet experienced on a cruise ship. O’sheehan’s bar and grill is a complementary table service restaurant offering all your comfort foods such as chicken wings, burgers, fish ‘n’ chips and more. Each night they have a speciality dish such as prime rib, lamb, or a rack or ribs.

I did not try any of the specialty restaurants because we found the food in the complimentary places was great. Shanghai’s noodle bar is a great complimentary Chinese restaurant.

The casino on board is HUGE! With lots of slots and tables to play on. They have a private poker area for the high rollers with a minimum $500 per hand bet. I found the majority of the tables and slots to be quite expensive.

All in all, I found the ship to be absolutely beautiful with lots on offer for everybody and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The only downside (in my opinion) is the layout of top deck. It doesn’t seem big enough to have nearly 4000 guests sunbathe on board and they need either a larger swimming pool, or more than one.

I will definitely be cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line again – But Royal Caribbean are still my favorite cruise line….

Where will my next adventure take me? I am currently planning, so check back later to see where I go and which cruise line I will be trying next.
