Caribbean Princess

Following my recent ship visit in Liverpool on board Caribbean Princess I was impressed by the ease of arrival to the cruise terminal, the warm welcome by the terminal staff and the overall ease of boarding the ship

Caribbean Princess at Liverpool Cruise Terminal

The majority of ships departing from the UK , usually sail from Southampton, which for guests in the North of England can entail either a flight from a northern airport, therefore restricting baggage allowance, and can be a nightmare in itself, with checking in and security. Another option is the gruelling four to five hour journey by either coach, or self driving to the port and parking for the duration of the cruise holiday.

Our drive from Manchester to Liverpool was relatively smooth, and I was surprised that it had taken around an hour and half, and this included the morning traffic and the 50mph speed restrictions on the M60 Motorway

The approach in itself was pleasant, with the view of landmarks such as the Liver Building, the iconic grand building which overlooks the River Mersey and was once hailed as the tallest building in Europe when built in 1911, and today is Grade 1 listed

On arrival to the port, car parking was easily accessible in the multi story car park directly opposite the terminal, with the cruise ship in full view and took less than 5 minutes to walk to the terminal.

Situated in a central location in the Irish Sea, Liverpool Cruise Terminal has become one of the most popular cruise destinations within Europe boasting a vast richness in maritime heritage and was the departure port for the first passenger cruise line and since opening the cruise terminal in 2007, many cruise ships and ocean liners have berthed there.

Liverpool Cruise Terminal invites international cruise passengers and has become a favourite with guests over the years and has been voted ‘Best UK Port of Call’ no less than three times within the last four years by Cruise Critic, and was voted ‘Destination of the Year’ in 2015, by Seatrade

On accessing the terminal we were greeted with the Liverpool Ukulele Orchestra, a group of smiley and friendly locals playing various hits from Liverpool’s very own Beatles. The atmosphere was joyful, and for the international guests arriving into the port of Liverpool for the first time, created a fantastic first impression.

I was surprised at the range of excursions this vibrant city had to offer cruise guests, so I have listed some top picks below, that Princess Cruises offer in, and around Liverpool.

The Beatles – A short drive to visit John Lennon’s home he lived in as a boy, and Paul McCartney’s boyhood home, with a guided tour of each home. A narrated drive through Liverpool, and stops for photos at Penny Lane and Strawberry Field. Guests can take a walk down Mathew Street, to the site of the Old Cavern Club where the Beatles performed over 300 times from February 1961 to August 1963.  A trip to The Beatles Story, located on the Albert Docks, showcases exhibits that chronicles the ‘Fab Four’ from their days spent in Hamburg, to their final break – up.

Liverpool City Highlights – A half – day narrated drive around the city of Liverpool allows guests to experience the sights and sounds of Liverpool, passing the Royal Liver Building with its towers topped by the Liver Birds, and a drive past Pier Head, the Town Hall and Chinatown. The tour continues with a visit to Christ the King Cathedral, Liverpool’s Roman Catholic basilica, and the Anglican Cathedral, boasting the title of the largest cathedral in Britain. Along the way, photo stops are taken at the Walker Art Gallery and St. George’s Hall, which is considered one of the finest neo – classical buildings in Europe.

Best of the Lake District – A full day tour, includes travel by land, train and lake. A scenic two – hour drive to Lake Windermere in the Lake District, the largest lake in England. Guests then board the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway for a steam train tour of the Leven River Valley. Free time to explore Bowness, a pretty and charming village on the shore of Lake Windermere

Conwy Castle and Town – A full day tour exploring the beautiful countryside of North Wales, with a scenic drive along the North Wales coastline to Conwy Castle. Conwy Castle is dubbed as one of the most impressive castles in Wales and boasts three fortified gates and no fewer than eight towers

Cruise Lines departing from Liverpool include, Fred Olsen and Cruise and Maritime, to name a few!

As Travel Agents we get to experience ship visits, giving us a great insight and first-hand knowledge on the cruise ships we sell

A few of us from Cruise Club UK joined the Caribbean Princess in Liverpool for the day, here’s our insight:

Newly renovated in March 2017, Caribbean Princess has had $8.2 million spent on her. Excited to see her makeover I couldn’t wait to discover her transformation.

The ship arrived late due to low fog, however I saw that as a benefit when we got to watch the smallest tug boat manoeuvre the huge Caribbean Princess into place. All checked in and given our visitor passes for the day we headed upto deck 7, aft – Club Fusion, this is a popular nightspot where live performances, karaoke and more take place.

A quick but in depth tour of the ship took us to the atrium for an exclusive performance from the ships entertainment staff. Princess pride themselves in the social hub of the atrium, with everything you could want all in one place. Plus if you’re like me who loves to people watch it’s the perfect place. International café – amazing peanut butter cookies and coffees to go plus much more – and its 24 hours – and no extra charge. Vines bar is a popular haunt with lots of wines on offer plus sushi freshly made.

A behind the scenes tour of the galley (kitchens) gave us a great insight into how the chefs operate and prepare for the days ahead.

We were able to view an obstructed ocean view cabin, really good size plus all cabins now feature the Princess luxury bed.

The Lotus Spa area is a really good size and flows really well. Starting with the hair salon, nails and teeth whitening. This then takes you to the new gym area with panoramic views to sea. Plenty of treatment rooms on offer too. The Sanctuary is an exclusive area for adults only, with pool area and large sun loungers which I found impressive.

Now to everyone’s favourite – food:

Located next to Neptune’s Reef & Pool is Slice Pizzeria – delightful large slice of Pepperoni pizza went down well with a fresh glass of lemonade (ship visits are hard work after all). Also on this deck and can’t go without a mention is the Salty Dog Grill, it’s ‘Ernesto Burger’ has won awards for the best at sea! Also around the pool area and the perfect location is Coffee & Cones, again complimentary. The World Fresh Market Place is newly designed and as I walked through I just wanted to grab the delicious sandwiches and everything else on offer!

A good old favourite is the Crown Grill, which is one of my favourite speciality dining venues. New to the ship is Planks BBQ and Steamers Seafood which are located opposite each other. Both very modern and clean and comes with a cover charge $$$$

Last stop of the day before a delightful 3 course meal was Skywalkers Nightclub. Situated aft on deck 15 with lovely panoramic views out to sea.

I was very impressed with Caribbean Princess, especially by the friendly staff and food options on offer. I would definitely look into booking my own itinerary onboard Caribbean Princess

Caribbean Princess which is currently in dry dock in the Bahamas until April 6th 2017 – the 3.200 guest Princess Cruise Lines ship will receive a multi million dollar refurb that will include 7 new redesigned dining venues, This will be Princess Cruises largest ever food and beverage renovation. On completion of her massive refurb she will sail over to the United Kingdom where she will sail from until the end of the summer season before sailing back over the Atlantic where she will then be based in the Caribbean.

The new and redesigned restaurants are as follows:

The Salty Dog Grill – this restaurant will feature up market burgers, fries and hot dogs created by Chef Ernesto Uchimura – he will also be serving his own creation the Ernesto Burger – this will come at a charge of $5.00 per person but can served with a beer from $8.00 per person. The Salty Dog Grill replaces Trident Grill.

Slice which was formerly known as Pizzeria will have a new menu that includes Neapolitan Pizza, meat balls and cheese and various great offerings.

As a new addition to the Princess Cruise Lines fleet will Coffee & Cones located on top deck will brew speciality drinks and will offer soft serve ice cream and gourmet ice cream sandwiches.

Blackbeard’s bar will now been known as the The Mix and with renovations being due to finish in Autumn.

The former Horizon Court Buffet will now be known as the World Fresh Marketplace and will have new food options in the way of a pancake station, freshlt prepared speciality sandwiches and a larfe carvery serving a varied selection of roast meats.

Also new to join Caribbean Princess will be Planks BBQ and Steamers Seafood – both of these restaurants will have a cover of $12.00 per person per visit.
