What is the first thing you do when you embark a cruise ship?

When I embark my cruise, the first thing I do is head straight up to the top deck by the pool and grab a cocktail. I will generally sit and stay here for an hour or so, taking in the new surroundings and people on board. In this time my husband has usually made his way to the buffet restaurant to get a head start on the “eating” week ahead. After an hour or so relaxing and checking out what the top deck has to offer, we make our way down the ship, deck-by-deck. This gives us a chance to see some of the ship before the rest of the passengers are on board.

When we are finished with having a walk around, if our cabin is ready we will go and check it out. Then we will head back up to the top deck to soak up more sun and cocktails.

I am sure most of you agree, one thing I hate to have to do when I embark is go to the muster drill. I feel as though my holiday has just got going and then It is put on hold for a very short while for the drill. Sitting there waiting for the other passengers to arrive at the drill is almost as annoying! I try to be the last one there, so I am the first out. And, lets be honest, the Drill is not the most entertaining to keep your attention.

This is why I think Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd are brilliant to have introduced an eight-minute video for their muster drill, which is designed to bring some fun to the dreaded drill on board!

shutterstock_18820957

All three brands; Azamara Club Cruises, Celebrity Cruise Line & Royal Caribbean Cruise Line will all be introducing the new video across their fleets. Azamara Club Cruises and Celebrity Cruise Line have already been showing the video on their ships, RCCL will introduce on their ships this month.

Named as “Operation: Little Bear” – The new muster video is a short film following the adventures of a secret agent who has been sent on board a cruise ship to intercept a gold teddy before it gets in to the hands of the wrong person. The agent on board has an off ship partner who supports her and helps her navigate around the ship and all of the safety procedures she will need to follow along the way.

According to the Cruise Company, the film will dramatize the do’s and don’ts of the safety on board in an entertaining way and promote the recall of safety messages.

So, lets hope the muster drill is no longer dreaded and is more welcomed by passengers.

Celebrity cruise lines are a Premium cruise company falling between their sister companies 4* Royal Caribbean and more specialized Azamara Club cruises.

I have sailed on a number of Celebrity ships and can honestly say I have been very impressed, from the ship layout, the service, food, exciting destinations and overall standard this cruise line definitely deserves its 5* rating, they have won many awards, most recently Best premium cruise line at the Travel weekly globe awards. In fact there is only one downside to cruising Celebrity which I have been told by a number of my passengers is that once you’ve cruised with them you won’t want to cruise with another company again.

With 10 larger ships in their fleet sailing worldwide and 3 explorer ships sailing the Galapagos and the launch of the brand new Celebrity Edge, Celebrity are constantly introducing more innovative features in their fleet. The Solstice class feature 5 ships the first Solstice, Equinox, Eclipse, Silhouette and Reflection, these are the largest and all very similar, with features such as the lawn club, cabanas and secret hideaways. Millenium class are mid sized, featuring 4 ships Millenium, Infinity, Constellation and Summit, these are a firm favourite with regular cruises, and all have been recently refurbished to bring them up to date with the Solstice class ships.

The biggest advantage of booking a Celebrity cruise right now is the complimentary classic all inclusive drinks package and $300 credit to spend onboard that they are offering on all sailings. In our new May brochure we have some fantastic offers and itineraries with Celebrity.

If you want to stay local there are 2 Mediterranean sailings in October with prices starting at just £1549p/p for a balcony on the newly refurbished Constellation

For those that may already have plans in the Summer and looking for something a little different the Emirate states have had consistent growth as a Winter destination over the last few years. Constellation has sailings from Dubai visiting Abu Dhabi and Oman and sailing over to India and has been highly recommended from passengers of Cruise Club

Or for the more adventurous traveller how about further afield? We have an amazing trip to New Zealand and Australia next February on the Solstice for 21 nights, or Thailand and Vietnam on the Millennium. I cruised from Singapore to Malaysia 2 years ago, it was a fascinating experience, it was somewhere I hadn’t thought to visit before but I’m so very glad I got the opportunity to do so as it opened my eyes to new cities and cultures

Breaking news from Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean……..

On board credit, offered as part of a promotional campaign, can now be spent before you even step on board your ship!

This is fantastic news as previously any on board credit given could only be used to make on board purchases, once on board the ship.

In my opinion this is a great benefit from Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean, I do not know of any other cruise line to offer this, and gives them a unique edge over their competitors.

A lot of guests like to use their on board credit to book shore excursions on board and I sometimes wonder if the most popular tours in St Petersburg, for example, are available once on board due to limited spaces. No worries on this count now as any excursions can be booked in advance using the credit!

The speciality dining packages are great value for money, which is another popular way to spend on board credit. By pre booking these online it means you can reserve your chosen restaurant, time and date. I have left this to do on board the ship in the past, to use my on board credit, and found the most popular times and restaurants already booked.

For those of you with Elite or Elite Plus Captains Club status, where you get discount on internet packages, you can now pre book these on your cruise planner and utilise any promotional on board credit to offset the amount.

All in all this policy change will be welcomed with open arms I am sure and leaves you free to fully enjoy your first day on board rather than having to sort out these finer details!

Below is an example of how your on board credit will show, once you are logged in to your cruise planner, to give you an idea of what to look out for.

On board credit celeb

Note; Azamara Club Cruises are hoping to follow suit, they are just working out logistics on this and have not given any indication on time scale as of yet.

Happy pre booking everyone and bravo to Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean!

Celebrity Cruise line are well known for their “Modern Luxury” cruise ships and are extremely popular with passengers of all ages, including families.

Most people would think a luxury cruise line wouldn’t have much on offer for the younger passengers in the family, and that’s where they are wrong.

With lots of different activities for all on board, there is something for everyone to have a wonderful cruise holiday.

Celebrity have the latest gadgets, games and devices on board their ships for the avid-gamers in the family. They have a partnership with Xbox which enables the cruise line to offer dedicated Xbox stations and mobile consoles on board, to feature one of the largest game and entertainment experiences at sea. Whether there’s a tournament taking place or just a gaming themed night, there is something for the youngest gamer to the most savvy teens on board. (You most likely have to drag them away from their current Xbox game!!)

I am sure we all do one thing the same when we cruise, and that is to over indulge on the magnificent food offered on board. You don’t have to worry about the kids not getting enough exercise, as Celebrity have produced some brilliant organized activities on board to keep them on the move. They have their Sports Court on board which offers the chance to shoot hoops or kick some goals into the net. They can of course do this with their friends and not in an organized group – we all know how independent teenagers are, right? Celebrity’s partnership with Zumba fitness also brings some fantastic activities aboard.

If there are any budding chefs in the family, why not let them take part in one of their classes on board. Celebrity offer some fantastic opportunity’s for young passengers on board to get some great culinary experience with options such as; Cupcake Decorating Classes, Pizza Making Class, Future Chefs Hands on Classes as well as a -behind-the-scenes tour that will give them the insight to how the chefs on board work their magic providing delicious, made-from-scratch meals for the entire ship every single day and night.

One thing that I find absolutely fabulous on board is the Video Project offered to the budding movie directors on board. Young guests will be given the use of a GoPro Hero 3 high definition, wideangle video camera to get the shots required for their movie. When they arrive at the class, the on board visionaries will create a storyboard for the videos they are to make. They are taken out to get the shots required – sometimes underwater too!! With this, they learn how to film and edit their videos. This takes place in the Celebrity ILounge on board. great way to create a holiday video!! Who knows, young Jimmy may be the next Spielberg.

Young passengers more interested in relaxing, well why not hit the Zspa!! With treatments geared towards the “Z” generation, they have the choice of Fabulously Fruity or Acne Attack Facials. If you need some bonding time, try out the Mother/Daughter or Father/Son packages on board.

Exciting news for Scotland and for myself. I read today that Scotland is predicted to be a new upcoming destination for 2017 with the cruise industry predicting a bumper season for Scottish ports, I for one was interested in reading this article as I am sailing around the Scottish Islands next Summer.

Boudicca_in_the_Sound_of_Mull_original

With more and more people cruising, many are getting bored of the typical Mediterranean destinations and more are looking for something different and new adventures.  In the last few years British Isles itineraries are becoming more popular with people wanting to see more of their home country, and the trend for no fly cruises is escalating. Many cruise lines now have at least 1 if not more itineraries around the UK calling at ports in England, Scotland and Ireland.

Cruise Scotland have advised that the cruise industry in Scotland has grown in 2016 by 5.3% and for 2017 a growth of 19.5% in comparison to this year. Amazingly a total of 808 ships have been booked to call in at a Scottish port in 2017 with over 650,000 passengers, bringing in £72.5 to the local economy. This was really surprising to me as you don’t quite realise how many options there are

When you look at the itineraries there are indeed many ports to visit and each bringing something different to the customer. There are the main cities of Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen (Invergordon) and Glasgow (Greenock). Then the islands of Shetland, Orkney, Skye, and the Outer and Inner Hebrides. Kirkwell in Orkney is the most visited port around the UK.

D1618_map_Web_original

When you look in more detail there really is so much to see up here and why not pay a visit? The large cities feature many beautiful architectural buildings, art galleries and points of history and interest. The Islands are beautiful and the scenery unbelievable. I remember seeing a beach that was in the top 10 beaches in the UK and a fair few were in the very North of Scotland, if you could guarantee the weather it would be heaven. Nature and wildlife also plays a large part for both land and sea. There are a number of birds to spot some even endangered, plus if your lucky, puffins, whales and dolphins

The main cruise lines sailing here are Fred Olsen and Cruise & Maritime which feature a number of itineraries, however Princess, P&O, Celebrity and Oceania also have a few sailings during the Summer.

If you would like information on any of these itineraries please don’t hesitate to call me on 0161 78 2516 or emailed marcia@cruiseclubuk.com

Afternoon cruisers.

Back in June I started speculating about the new design of ships coming from celebrity cruises.

http://wp.me/p5u3P7-1pu

Back then we didn’t have any ideas as to what celebrity cruise had up their sleeves, and unfortunately we still don’t know much.

Time is ticking for Celebrity.

STX

Celebrity boasted that the new design of ship will be debuting in fall 2018. Well time is nearly up for them now as 2018 / 2019 cruises go on sale at the end of November.

What do we know?

There are 4 ships on order

The “Celebrity Edge” launching 2018

The “Celebrity Beyond” launching 2020

  • The other two – as yet unnamed ships are scheduled for 2022 + 2024.

The ships will be 117 thousand tonnes, and will accommodate 2900 passengers (ratio of 1/40.34)

  • The Celebrity Reflection (current flagship) is 126 thousand tonnes and at 3046 guest is a ratio of 1/41.35

The concept for the celebrity edge is “Project EDGE will deliver small ship itineraries with large ship amenities”

There are rumours that the ships will not feature a main dining room and will have up to 14 “eateries” onboard. I would guess that few of those are free and most will be “for a fee”

As the 2018 itineraries are on sale 29 November they’ll need to do some announcing soon.

  • People are unlikely to book a ship they know nothing about
  • We can’t sell the cruises without a deck plan, or an idea as to how the dining works.

If they delay the cruise going on sale, they’ll be creating a big hole in their schedules – opening up more rumours in the industry.

New ships are usually kept a secret until they absolutely have to announce – and this time they’re really waiting until the last minute to announce.

As soon as I know more – I’ll let you know.

One thing I do know is that if there is another Southampton preview cruise – I’ll have to do another CCUK members event!!

Tarar for now.

  • The Capn.

The results are in for the 2016 UK Editors’ Picks Awards.

I think the most surprising result has to be the best new cruise ship of 2016, announced as the TIU Discovery from Thomson Cruise Lines. Purely because the ship doesn’t have all the singing and dancing features of some of the other new additions introduced this year. Previously the Royal Caribbean Splendour of the Seas, the TUI Discovery is the first for a UK cruise line to offer passengers a rock climbing wall, outdoor cinema and virtual band. Specifically tailored to the UK market, she has proved to be a winner!

Thomson Cruises
TUI Discovery

Another UK cruise line picked up an award as the Best Cruise Line for dining, P&O Cruise Lines.

Royal Caribbean took the most awards for: Best Cruise Line for Entertainment, Best Cruise Line Suites and Best Cruise Line for Families.

Sister company to Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruise Lines took the award for Best Cruise Line Shore Excursions and Best Cruise Line Cabins.

Best Cruise Line Itineraries award went to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines who sail from more UK ports than any other cruise line. They offer many different types of sailings. from a five night Norwegian fjord cruise out of Newcastle, to a 107 night voyage from Southampton to Sydney. They have fly-cruises to unique places like the Amazon and Africa.

Sunset on a river in the Amazon

Cunard took the Best Cruise Ship Refurbishment for their “re-mastering” of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship. Fifteen new single cabins were just one of the new features introduced to the cruise line.

If its Romance your after, then look at Princess Cruise lines as they scooped the Best Cruise Line for Romance award.

Of course, it had to be the one and only Hurtigruten line which took Best Cruise Line for Adventure. They offer trips like no other. whether it is husky sledding, quad biking, glacier calving, snorkelling in antartica or a hike to the hills of Greenland, they have something to offer for everyone.

Best Cruise Line for Nightlife award is given to Norwegian Cruise Line – which isn’t surprising as they have around 20 bars and lounges on each of their ships.

Liverpool got the Best UK Port of Call award and Southampton got the Best UK Departure Port award.
