Are you a fan of Princess Cruises? Are you also one of the millions of Downton Abbey fans? If so, you are in luck. Princess are bringing the period drama to their UK based ships this summer.

Both the 3,100-guest Emerald Princess and Caribbean Princess will be showcasing costumes and jewellery worn by several characters from the hit drama. These displays will be made available for guests to view on the theatre stage at least once per cruise.

As part of the exhibits there will be an exclusive ‘making of Downton Abbey’ film, which will be played and there will be afternoon tea served afterwards. Episodes of the show will also be available to watch on guests’ stateroom televisions.
The exhibit will be on Emerald Princess from May 20 to September 5 when she sails from Southampton to both the Mediterranean and Scandinavia. Caribbean Princess’ exhibit will be available from May 18 to September 3 during her season sailing around the British Isles.

It is the latest link between the cruise line and the show after Hugh Bonneville, who played Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey, recently narrated ITV’s ‘The Cruise’, which was a six-part documentary about day to day life on-board Regal Princess, the cruise line’s newest ship.shutterstock_198334649

Personally I have never watched the show and this is not something that would interest me but I think this would certainly appeal to a lot of people, particularly the American guests as this show has been a massive hit on the other side of the pond.

The exhibit will join a host of new features on Emerald Princess. After a recent multi-million dollar refit, the ship now boasts two new restaurants – The Salty Dog Gastro-pub and SHARE by Curtis Stone. There is also an exclusive musical, ‘Magic To Do’, composed by Oscar-winning writer Stephen Schwartz.

Based on board P&O Britannia and filmed over two Mediterranean Cruises, the concept brings together travel and food in the first reality TV cookery show at sea. Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White oversees the celebrities as they battle to become the winner

blog pic

The show aired from Monday 4th April 2016. Taking in 5 different ports of call during the week, giving each celebrity a turn to be head chef for the evening, whilst being guided and advised from Marco Pierre White

Setting: The Cookery Club Kitchen on board P&O Britannia

Sitting down for the first episode I didn’t really know what to expect. You don’t really get chance to see much of the ship, however each morning in port the celebrities are greeted by the Captain and Chef and told to create an authentic meal local to the area. Celebrities are then split into 2 teams and head off into the port (first one being Vigo). They are given tasks to meet local chefs and they talk them through what food is popular in the area, the history behind it and the cooking process and given time to taste the food

I have to say I loved this part of the programme, you get to see rural Vigo and watch the locals who have cooked family hand me down recipe for centuries. Celebrities are busy taking notes or getting their hands dirty at this stage

Back on board as the ship sets sail ready for the next day’s port of call…..

Celebrities are met by Chef Marco and as a group talk through their new found knowledge. Based on their enthusiasm a head chef is then picked

Each head chef comes up with a menu consisting of the following:

They are then allocated a time by Chef Marco until the Captain and his VIP guests arrive ready and eager to dine

At the end of the evening the head chef is allocated points from the Captain, Chef Marco and the VIP guests – whoever has the most points at the end of the 5 day show is crowned Battlechef

With prices starting from £45 for 2 hours, I’m really eager to sail on board P&O Britannia and experience the pre bookable Cookery Club Class

All in all it makes a perfect backdrop and I have my fingers crossed for a 2nd series

Hi my name is Julie Taylor and I have been in the travel business for over sixteen years but moved into cruises only 10 months ago

Well after a month of hard training I was allowed to finally take calls and sell these beautiful cruise ships

I knew to really be enthusiastic about selling cruises I would have to experience one for myself so when one came up on a staff auction I didn’t hesitate and got my bids in, it was perfect as well as it included my partner’s birthday

Yes I won and was set to sail on board Celebrity Constellation on the 30th September for 12 nights I was so excited but if I am honest I wasn’t getting the same response from my partner (but he is laid back, almost asleep)

The itinerary was very exciting Croatia, Greece And Turkey, we flew into Istanbul, had a night in a hotel then made our way to the ship and from the moment we stepped from the taxi I knew this was going to be special.

Istanbul Skyline

The ship was so big and I remember looking up at the balcony cabins and thinking I wish I had one of those.

We were greeted by the most friendly courteous members of staff ever and shown to our cabin, we had been allocated a inside cabin mid ship and the room was lovely, even if it had no window and so much space every little detail had been thought of.

We both had a amazing time. Where can you go and wake up every day in a different destination, food was delicious all nationalities catered for the drinks were great too, more on the Martini bar later!

More details about this great cruise in my next issue
