The Western Mediterranean is considered to be one of the most diverse and unique cruising regions, spreading over two continents (Europe and Africa), this area boasts the artistic beauties of Italy, France and Spain whilst combining the Arabic culture in areas such as Morocco and Tunisia. These particular  itineraries are perfect for those interested in art and history, who also like to combine and  experience the areas most popular landmarks,  stunning beaches, cafes bars, boutique shops and traditional markets. Highlights include, the famous Las Ramblas, Barcelona, the cosmopolitan and thriving hub of this fantastic city. A visit to Capri, is a must from Sorrento or Naples

Royal Square, Barcelona

The Western Mediterranean as a cruising region, offers a spectrum of culture and arts, combined with beautiful beaches and a laid back atmosphere. Itineraries offered within this region include ports of call within, Spain, Italy and France, and sometimes include stops in Lisbon for Portugal, the Canary Islands, and Casablanca and Tangier for Morocco, and Gibralter

It was once considered best to visit the Western Mediterranean region during spring and the summer months, however cruise lines such as MSC and Costa are beginning to offer all year round itineraries within this area, with Barcelona and Marseilles (France),  still being included on the itinerary, they are now sailing further southwards towards Morocco and into the Canaries.

Some of the larger ships usually visit the bigger ports, including destinations, such as Barcelona, Rome and Florence. The vast majority of cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Line, tend to offer itineraries either starting in these ports, or featuring them on their itineraries

Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises are based from Italy, and can offer shorter cruise itineraries at much lower prices. For a more British feel, P&O Cruises and Cunard offer a variety of sailings, whilst the luxury cruise lines such as Azamara, Crystal, Silversea, Seabourn, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas offer itineraries to smaller ports of call such as Cannes, Capri and Portofino and often spend much longer in port.

Stay tuned for part 2 of my blog!!!

A while back I blogged about the refit of the Queen Victoria, her refit is now complete. I was eager to see what changes had taken place compared to what was originally stated, I wasn’t disappointed. During the refit of Cunard’s Queen Victoria, her service offering has been brought in line with that of the rest of the fleet and her popular aft lido sun deck has been expanded.

The new design maximises and transforms her aft deck space to create a stunning contemporary mix of sun and shade, more akin to a luxury resort roof terrace – perfect for sailing around the Mediterranean. Guests are now able to enjoy more generous seating, enhanced deck furniture, extended shaded areas, al fresco dining options and a full beverage service throughout the day and into the evening, with live entertainment.

Chart_Room_Night_Low_2Va_804x369

Contrary to speculation that Queen Victoria’s popular Chart Room was to be removed during her refit, it has simply been moved. And in the process, refined with the allure and glamour of a classic cocktail bar from the heyday of her key sailing destinations. Through charts and cartography, her elegant new menu navigates destination-specific stories, pairing a selection of classic beverages with light canapés and snacks – and the introduction of delectable Godiva chocolates. In the evening, this elegant venue serves cocktails linked to celestial charts from which ships used to navigate. Signature specials will be created for different destinations and voyages.

The Midships Lounge has also received some special attention with the introduction of a gin and fizz themed menu, including gin served from an old-fashioned spirit tap – to infuse a more distinctive character. This brings to life wines, Prosecco, Cava and Champagne alongside premium gin and spirits, all blended to create fresh and inspiring cocktails.

The Yacht club

The Yacht Club makes its dazzling debut on board Queen Victoria, featuring expansive seating and extended serving hours. In the daytime, the Club hosts a greater range of social activities, in addition to many insightful and entertaining events. At 3.00pm, the deck transitions into pre- and post-dinner entertainment venue with superb dedicated jazz music, followed by a DJ and dance band late into the night.

Winter_Garden_804x369

One surprising constant with Cunard is change: they continually strive to bring you an even more refined experience. That is why, during the refit of Queen Victoria, two of her popular public areas have been refreshed. The Winter Garden is a beautifully relaxed room in the heart of deck 9 close to the pool and Lido buffet. Flooded with natural light, the room’s floor to ceiling windows command some of the best views across the ship and out to sea. Perfect for watching the world go by whilst enjoying a beverage, the comfort and décor of the Winter Garden has been further refined: from the statement floor, glorious glass canopy to the elegant lounge furniture.

Following Queen Victoria’s refit, guests wishing to escape or entertain within their Cunard Grand Suite can discover a host of enhancements. These include a clever configuration of furniture to maximise comfort and convenience, together with refreshed interior design. The many other appeals of a Cunard Grand Suite include: floor to ceiling windows and doors, a separate snug room with TV, a beautifully-appointed lounge, a master bathroom with sea view, a second bathroom with guest access, a bedroom TV that folds down from the ceiling, a walk-in wardrobe with additional storage units, and a generous dual aspect balcony.

Some changes to staterooms have taken place.

Britannia Club balconies

Britannia Club accommodation and dining comes to Cunard’s Queen Victoria with the introduction of 43 spacious Britannia Club balcony staterooms in a prime midship location on decks 7 and 8.

Britannia Club restaurant.

Each Britannia Club stateroom features all the hallmarks of Cunard style and comfort, but further enhanced with premium balconies, a nine-pillow concierge menu and the freedom to dine whenever you choose in a new Britannia Club restaurant.

Was this a refit fit for a Queen? I think I would have to agree.

I’ve just spent the past 2 nights onboard the iconic Cunard QM2

After the 4 hour train journey to Southampton I and my OAP mother arrived for our overnight hotel stay at the Harbour Grand Hotel. I’ve not sailed from Southampton for a good year and was surprised by the changes. A very modern and expensive ‘phase 2’ of West Quay is near completion, offering a huge variety of drinking and dining venues to choose from.

qm

Our tickets advised check in from 2pm, but being inpatient and excited we decided to get a taxi from our hotel to the port at 12pm. On arrival we were handed a card with a W on and asked to wait in the lounge until we were called. We didn’t need to wait long and finally got to checkin and embarked the QM2.

cabin

Once onboard with ship, with map in hand we headed straight to our assigned cabin. Now I’d booked this on a saver fare which meant our cabin and dining were allocated only weeks before departure. Deck 5, cabin 5223. Inside accessible cabin (both of us were able bodied) was very spacious and the first time I had ever stayed in an inside cabin. I was worried about the lack of light as neither I nor my mother like dark rooms, however was surprised with the light coming in from under the door made it perfect for us!

carintina
Carinthia Lounge

Carrying our QM2 map around we headed off for self-guided ship tour. First stop the Carinthia Lounge, the perfect place to relax and unwind and enjoy a light snack. I enjoyed a mini turkey blt, a light bight to eat and kept me going until our evening meal. We spent the next few hours wandering around the promenade on deck 7 with views over the aft pool on deck 6. Time came to sail away so we opted for a teak sun lounger in the sunshine. Having been allocated 1st dining at 6pm, we totally missed this as we were enjoying the weather and views too much. We decided to eat in Kings Court, which is a relaxed self-service restaurant, offering a good choice of starters/mains and desserts.

Library onboard

Our 2 night cruise sailed to Zeebrugge Port and we booked a return shuttle service to Bruges so we could do our own thing once there.

port

*Top Tip*: Once off the ship a free port shuttle service takes you to the entrance/exit of the port. If you book an independent cruise excursion this is where the pick-up will be!

bruges
Bruges

Beautiful Brugge for the day: 8 Euro canal boat tour for 30 minutes and wandering around the cobbled streets. Great for chocolate lovers.

Back onboard for sail away at 530pm. We dined in Kings Court again followed by window shopping and enjoying a string quartet in the lobby. Finished off with a drink in Sir Samuel’s, surrounded by elegant art deco to unwind in.

I can honestly say we truly enjoyed our minibreak onboard QM2, now all I need to do is decide which Cunard ship to experience next

Cunard have announced that the Queen Victoria will undergo a multi million pound refit which will also include single staterooms.

She will be taken out of service on 5th May 2017 and will undergo a 34 million pound upgrade with an expected completion date of 4th June 2017. The refit will take place Fincantieri Shipyard in Palermo, Italy.

Britania_Club_Restaurant_Still_3V

Whilst maintaining her elegance and history the refurbishments will usher this regal ship into a new, updated chapter. New to Queen Victoria will include the Britannia club dining room which will offer guests the flexibility of dining when they want and also an intimate restaurant along with 43 spacious Britannia Club staterooms which are located in a prime mid-ship location on Decks 7 and 8.

The new staterooms will include newly designed carpets, flat screen TV’s, mostly 32″ or above, soft furnishings  as well as tea and coffee making facilities.  The ships majestic grand suites and deck 8 aft penthouse suites have been completely re-designed and the ship will now feature a chart room bar.

Chart_Room_Night_2Va

The new Chart Room will be located on Deck 2 off the Grand Lobby, where Café Carinthia is currently located. The Chart Room will feature illy coffee, Godiva chocolate treats and light bites by day and stellar cocktails by night. Cunard will also introduce a “gin and fizz” themed menu to the Midships Lounge, including a variety of wines, Proseccos, Cavas and Champagne alongside premium gins and spirits, all blended to create fresh and inspiring cocktails with a modern twist.

QV_mock_gold_-_871-03

As on Queen Elizabeth, sun awnings will be erected on the open area near the stern Lido pool and on both sides of the Grills Upper Terrace area near the top of the ship to offer more shade on deck.

In the shopping area on board there will be new Fine Jewellery and Watch shops and the layout, lighting and overall shopping experience for passengers is being enhanced.

People have asked why Queen Victoria is being refitted when she already meets every expectation; she simply prefers to exceed them. For those who like to cruise with Cunard it sounds like you are in for a real treat. More details on Queen Victoria’s refurbishment will follow over the coming months.
