Having just returned from my first Cruise & Maritime cruise my first words would be wow. I boarded with trepidation as I’d heard so many mixed reviews of this cruise line but from the quick and efficient check in to the glitzy atrium in my favourite colour purple my first impression certainly exceeded expectations

My cruise was sailing from Tilbury and around the Scottish Isles on Cruise & Maritime’s new flagship Columbus.

Our first stop was our cabin, and I was mightily impressed with the size even though it was only an inside. The storage space was unbelievable with so many drawers in the wardrobe area and the main cabin, the bathroom a reasonable size too my only gripe was that there was only 1 plug socket.

With the weather being so nothing like when we left Manchester our first port of call was a cheeky glass of prosecco in the swim up bar to cool off before catching a few rays in the unusual British heat.

c ship outside

The food in the main restaurant was fantastic, just as good as what I’ve eaten on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity. My only disappointment at breakfast was the lack of fresh bread, it was mainly standard sliced, which I guess really was a good thing as bread is my downfall on a cruise or any holiday. Lunch was served until 3, on many occasion we got back too late for lunch but afternoon tea was served from 3.30 -4.30 with an array of cakes and sandwiches. Waiters walked round the ship with a selection of canapes about 10.30 incase you fancied a little something extra

C buffet

My highlight was being invited to the Captains dinner on the first formal evening. We were greeted with a glass of sparkling wine before being introduced to the Captain and the Hotel director, a photo opportunity later and we were taken into the private area of the Chefs table in the main restaurant for dinner. There were some amusing conversations as the Captain was Greek and hotel director Italian so you can imagine the competition

C chefs table

c captains night

The theatre was always full for the shows and there was plenty of entertainment onboard, the cruise was actually an Antiques Legends theme which included many a celebrity including Henry Sandon and Caroline Hawley and you could have your treasures valued

The service onboard was good, not as good as other cruises I’ve been on but nothing to complain about. Our cabin steward was eager to please and always on hand when required.

All in all this was an excellent cruise, a wonderful itinerary and a fabulous cruise, I’ve never really thought about cruising with this cruise line before, in fact it was a customer of mine that brought this to my attention by booking this same cruise and I am so thankful to her as I had a brilliant holiday and would definitely cruise with Cruise and Maritime again

My cruise was sailing from Tilbury and around the Scottish Isles on Cruise & Maritime’s new flagship Columbus, launched in June this year she has previously belonged to Princess cruises, Ocean Village and P&O. Following a huge refurbishment she has come to life with modern décor whilst still regaining the traditional style that Cruise and Maritime are known for and for which their loyal passengers love.

colombus atrium

The largest of their fleet Columbus is almost 64,000 tonnes, carries 1400 passengers and has 11 passenger decks. The cruise line has listened to what their passengers want, this ship has 64 balconies and junior suites, and 150 cabins for single occupancy which is much appreciated by passengers. Its nice that they do cater so much for solo travellers as much as couples, which is why Cruise and Maritime have such a large following. I met many people that cruise with them regularly.

With 1 main restaurant the Waterfront, Plantation buffet and 2 speciality restaurants, Fusion a mix of Asian Indian cuisine and Grill specialising in steak, plus the alfresco grill open daily for burgers, afternoon tea and the speciality coffee bars featuring cakes and pastries you can be sure never to go hungry.

c fusion

c grill

There are 7 lounges and bars onboard, Raffles is a classy affair overlooking the main atrium and is the perfect start to your evening. The Dome is the late night bar with music and dancing, the oldies can really teach the young a thing or two. My favourite bar was the Oasis bar at the aft of the ship on deck 8, the back has tiered sunbathing areas with comfy loungers spanning over 5 decks, deck 8 is also where the jacuzzi’s are located, we spent a goregous afternoon in the jacuzzi, glass of fizz whilst watching the ship sail from Invergordon

c sunbeds

Indoor bars included Connexions and Taverners pub, located next to each other but both with a very different feel, these featured resident singers every night which was a lovely way to spend your evening after dinner

C connexions

The spa and fitness centre I was told were both very good, neither of which I visited, one minute you are on your first day planning everything and what there is to do, the next its your last day and you realise you haven’t even seen half the ship. The atmosphere onboard is so relaxed that you think you have all the time in the world, I think this is where Cruise and Maritime have really hit the spot, they are a friendly professional cruise line that really do cater for all ages. Although the majority of passengers were older we met a few guests that were younger, some on their first cruise and they loved it. It’s taught me not to always believe what you hear, to try something different and make the most of every opportunity that opens to you.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines recently announced their newest addition to their fleet, Spectrum of the Seas, and is set to wow passengers as the first ULTRA Quantum Class.

With the Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas and the Anthem of the Seas already wowing passengers on the High Seas, Royal Caribbean are adding another mega ship to their collection. Named as the Spectrum of the Seas, the 4,180 passenger ship will be the fourth ship to join the Quantum class of ships and will take to the water in 2019.

RC_Aquatheatre[1]

Just like her sisters the Quantum of the Seas and the Ovation of the seas, she is destined for the Chinese Market. Royal Caribbean are set to delight passengers in Asia Pacific area with the amazing ship.

Facilities on board the new ship have still as of yet not been released but I am sure Royal Caribbean will raise the bar with this new Mega Ship.

With Bumper Cars, Sky Diving, Ice Skating, Zip Lines, Carousels, Flow riders, Robotic Bartenders Water Slides, Interchanging restaurants and much more on other ships in their fleet, Imagine what they have in store for this new class ship?

Bionic Bar, Quantum of the Seas
Bionic Bar, Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean are not the biggest cruise operator in the world, but they do operate the largest individual cruise line by passenger capacity and they also sail the largest cruise ships in the world. Having sailed numerous times on many of their ships, Royal Caribbean are (in my opinion) one of the best cruise lines on the market for couples and families. Something for everyone on board!

Royal Caribbean are set to announce more details about their new ship, so check back to keep up to date with the latest Ultra Quantum Class ship.

If you have read my previous blog you will be fully read up on my trip to Amsterdam, here is part 2, our second day began with opening our curtains and seeing our ship MS Koningsdam  from our window, followed by the mother of all breakfasts at our hotel, there was so much to choose from, especially if your a sucker for fresh bread like me, and the most amazing cumin flavoured cheese, so much so I even bought some to bring home, the price I paid i shall not disclose!

MS Koningsdam is Holland America’s newest ship launched in April 2016 she is their largest in their fleet to date and the first in their Pinnacle class. And what a ship she is, I’ve seen quite a few whilst working here at Cruise Club UK but wow this is by far the most impressive ship for me

IMG_0281

Much more modern than I expected, Koningsdam has a bright open feel, what I loved most was the pale greys and creams with a splash of bright orange, pink and green flowers, beach towels and napkins giving an edge that makes her stand out from the others

Koningsdam, inkeeping with her Dutch heritage is a mix of contemporary and classic design which is significant of the Holland America line, her name also lends well to her roots “Koning,” means king in Dutch, and is a salute to King Willem-Alexander, the Netherland’s first king in over 100 years.

IMG_0252

We began our tour in the Atrium which was light and airy, followed by the spa and pool deck, including the exclusive concierge area with private sun loungers and hydrotherapy pool. Dining plays a large part on any cruise and you wont be disappointed on this ship. The Lido restaurant has a more upmarket feel to any other buffet restaurant, instead of one large serving area they have smaller individual themed service stations for different types of food.  The main restaurant was spectacular, bright and colourful with creams and yellows, the pictures you may have seen do not do this justice at all. There are also a number of new speciality restaurants and innovations including the Culinary Arts Center, new ala carte dining such as Tamarind, Canaletto and Sel de Mer. Then there was my favourite Blend by Chateau Ste. Michelle, where you can blend your own wine whilst sampling a variety of grapes to help create your perfect wine

IMG_0291IMG_0295IMG_0208

Artwork features heavily on the ship and with a modern feel you can discover creative new art around every corner, the Koningsdam has been decorated with a music theme and the art certainly blends well with this

IMG_0250

Club Hal is popular for families, I was even told that their kids clubs are one of the best at sea, although I would say Holland America isn’t a cruise line that first springs to mind they are very welcoming for the younger generation

Public areas flow with the same style of openess and space, plenty sunbeds around the pool with a retractable roof for when the weather isn’t too great, a homemade ice cream section and a modern style theatre ready for your evening entertainment

IMG_0220

All in all I was extremely impressed with this ship, my first Holland America experience, my only complaint was that we had to leave for our flight home, oh how tempted I was to become a stowaway.

Whether your a previous cruiser with Holland or similar lines, a first time cruiser or someone who likes the finer things in life I can truly recommend this ship and you will not be disappointed. She is currently sailing from Amsterdam to Northern Europe and then will move over to the Caribbean for the Winter season so if this sounds like your kind of cruise do not hesitate to contact me today marcia@cruiseclubuk.com

Last weekend I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to fly to Amsterdam and sample the delights of a new promotion between Holland America and Superbreak

Superbreak are a rennouned company in the UK offering mainly hotels and theatre breaks, however this has all begun to change. They have recently expanded to offering worldwide hotels and tour packages and Amsterdam is one of their most popular breaks.

To gain an insight into what Superbreak packages have to offer a handful of travel agents were flown out for an unforgettable weekend to experience what our guests can book.

IMG_0054

Once we arrived in Amsterdam we met with a local tour guide who was very knowledgable in the history of the city and took a group of us on a walking tour beginning at the port walking past the train station, past the famous Dam square, the shopping district and of course the red light district, which in daylight was a bit underwhelming, until dark came and the area came to life.

Lunch was served at  Haesje Claes, a typical Dutch restaurant which was full at lunchtime. A traditional set menu was served including smoked mackeral, roast chicken and the most amazing apple and cinnamon cake for dessert.

IMG_0102

After lunch a wander around the flower market to see the many flowers and tulips on offer before we ventured back to our hotel, the grand Moevenpick right at the port. A beautiful hotel in an excellent location only a 10 minute walk from the central train station and situated right at the cruise terminal, we had a fantastic view of Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas from our bedroom window and watched a typical sail away

IMG_0106

Once the evening came we were taken on a canal river boat dinner cruise, where we sailed through the canals of Amsterdam whilst being wined and dined with a 4 course meal and unlimited wine. Again a set menu which we had pre ordered but were given a choice of either meat, fish or vegetarian. The hosts offered a fantastic service and we saw a lovely sun set whilst onboard before arriving back at the dock, where we treated ourselves to a couple of cheeky drinks before heading back to our hotel for a well deserved nights rest before our visit to Holland America’s new MS Koningsdam on Sunday morning.

Set to be fleet wide by March 2017, Holland America Line have announced their plans to build upon their partnership with BBC Earth, by revealing new enrichment activities and “feature cruises” with the line.

The programme has been available on select ships since April 2016 and is destination-focused. For all guests interested in the places they visit, this is a great programme to be involved with.

BBC Earth will now feature a concert, based on the TV series “Frozen Planet”. Musicians perform live, as images are shown on the background screen from around the world.

They will introduce gameshows, trivia and “Inside Earth” documentary films.

Holland America Line have revealed four feature cruises which will offer passengers the change to sail with the BBC Earth experts for a behind-the-scenes look at the TV channel’s documentaries. Experts will include the shows producers and cameramen who will all host master classes and of course, Question and Answers.

The have four different ships offering four different feature cruises.

The brand new ship is the Koningsdam, which will offer a seven night eastern Caribbean sailing from fort Lauderdale. The beautiful Oosterdam will sail on 7th April from Tampa to San Diego on an 18 Night panama canal transit.

Maasdam will sail from Montreal to Boston for a seven night Canada & New England cruise.

The results are in for the 2016 UK Editors’ Picks Awards.

I think the most surprising result has to be the best new cruise ship of 2016, announced as the TIU Discovery from Thomson Cruise Lines. Purely because the ship doesn’t have all the singing and dancing features of some of the other new additions introduced this year. Previously the Royal Caribbean Splendour of the Seas, the TUI Discovery is the first for a UK cruise line to offer passengers a rock climbing wall, outdoor cinema and virtual band. Specifically tailored to the UK market, she has proved to be a winner!

Another UK cruise line picked up an award as the Best Cruise Line for dining, P&O Cruise Lines.

Royal Caribbean took the most awards for: Best Cruise Line for Entertainment, Best Cruise Line Suites and Best Cruise Line for Families.

Sister company to Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruise Lines took the award for Best Cruise Line Shore Excursions and Best Cruise Line Cabins.

Best Cruise Line Itineraries award went to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines who sail from more UK ports than any other cruise line. They offer many different types of sailings. from a five night Norwegian fjord cruise out of Newcastle, to a 107 night voyage from Southampton to Sydney. They have fly-cruises to unique places like the Amazon and Africa.

Sunset on a river in the Amazon

Cunard took the Best Cruise Ship Refurbishment for their “re-mastering” of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship. Fifteen new single cabins were just one of the new features introduced to the cruise line.

If its Romance your after, then look at Princess Cruise lines as they scooped the Best Cruise Line for Romance award.

Of course, it had to be the one and only Hurtigruten line which took Best Cruise Line for Adventure. They offer trips like no other. whether it is husky sledding, quad biking, glacier calving, snorkelling in antartica or a hike to the hills of Greenland, they have something to offer for everyone.

Best Cruise Line for Nightlife award is given to Norwegian Cruise Line – which isn’t surprising as they have around 20 bars and lounges on each of their ships.

Liverpool got the Best UK Port of Call award and Southampton got the Best UK Departure Port award.

After many months of silence from Mr Branson it looks like the propellers are finally in motion at virgin cruises.

At a press conference on the 18th Of October they made some very important milestone announcements.

  • 3 brand new ships

A contract is signed with Fincantieri shipyard for delivery in 2020, 2021 & 2022

  • Homeport of the first (as yet unnamed) vessel will be Miami, Florida and they’re sailing the Caribbean to begin with.
  • They’ve changed their name.

No more Virgin cruises – It’s now “Virgin Voyages”

virgin-voyages-logo-fill-600x400

Branson stated that the word “cruise” is awful and he does not want it associated with their product.

  • The ships will be “Clean”.

Using re-cycling technology they’re aiming to have the cleanest “voyage” ships afloat.

  • The Line is promising unique ports and a very social experience on board.

Also a new logo, introduction video was also released.

“This is anything but just another cruise or holiday, it will be a transformational experience”

Tom McAlpin, Virgin group’s president and C.E.O

As usual Mr Branson’s appearance was unique

Virgin seem to be aligning their voyages squarely at a younger age range than the traditional “cruise” line. Separating themselves from the cruise industry could be a very bold move. Will then be shunned by the cruise community and operate as a totally different offering? Surely if virgin are chasing the younger audience then that could be a very brave but important move to make!

Very little information is available and we have at least 2 years until it goes on sale.

So what do you think, are you considering a virgin voyage?
