New ships for 2018

The big three are back: Skyride, IMAX & Havana Bar

We loved having her sister ship, Carnival Vista in Europe last year. So it’s great news that come April 2018 Carnival Horizon will be sailing 4 Mediterranean Itineraries before her Transatlantic sailing over to New York. Here’s a quick overview of her 2018 schedule:

2nd April 2018 Maiden Voyage from Barcelona for 13 nights

15th April/22nd April 2018 7 night sailings from Barcelona

29th April 2018 10 night sailing from Barcelona

9th May 2018 14 night Transatlantic to New York

Between 28th May 2018 & 5th September 2018 Carnival Horizon will do 8 night Caribbean sailings

From 22nd September 2018 she will arrive in her homeport of Miami for alternating Caribbean sailings

What to expect:

I was fortunate enough to sail on the Carnival Vista in June 2017, having never sailed with Carnival before I didn’t know what to expect! It was amazing, the highlight for me was the choice of dining day and night, and I ate in the speciality restaurants each evening. To find out more about my Carnival Vista experience read my blog by clicking here!

Back to Carnival Horizon, the Vista’s sister ship, currently under construction in Italy. There is still a reason to get excited by taking a sneaky peek:

It’s about uniting with one another, getting together with great fun, comfort, dining and exotic destinations. Here’s the stats:

133,500 Gross tonnage

3,934 Guest capacity

1,062 feet long

1,450 Onboard crew

Highlights include:

Havana Bar & Pool: An exclusive retreat to paradise during the day, come sundown the bar comes to life as a hot dance spot

Carnival Multiplex featuring IMAX: Horizon will feature TWO movie theatres next door to each other. One is IMAX, complete with huge screen and the other is a Thrill Theatre where you’re invited to a 3D experience

SKYRIDE: Located at SportsSquare, strap in and zip safely around the two lane suspended bike course high above deck

Afternoon cruisers.

Back in June I started speculating about the new design of ships coming from celebrity cruises.

Back then we didn’t have any ideas as to what celebrity cruise had up their sleeves, and unfortunately we still don’t know much.

Time is ticking for Celebrity.

Celebrity boasted that the new design of ship will be debuting in fall 2018. Well time is nearly up for them now as 2018 / 2019 cruises go on sale at the end of November.

What do we know?

There are 4 ships on order

The “Celebrity Edge” launching 2018

The “Celebrity Beyond” launching 2020

  • The other two – as yet unnamed ships are scheduled for 2022 + 2024.

The ships will be 117 thousand tonnes, and will accommodate 2900 passengers (ratio of 1/40.34)

  • The Celebrity Reflection (current flagship) is 126 thousand tonnes and at 3046 guest is a ratio of 1/41.35

The concept for the celebrity edge is “Project EDGE will deliver small ship itineraries with large ship amenities”

There are rumours that the ships will not feature a main dining room and will have up to 14 “eateries” onboard. I would guess that few of those are free and most will be “for a fee”

As the 2018 itineraries are on sale 29 November they’ll need to do some announcing soon.

  • People are unlikely to book a ship they know nothing about
  • We can’t sell the cruises without a deck plan, or an idea as to how the dining works.

If they delay the cruise going on sale, they’ll be creating a big hole in their schedules – opening up more rumours in the industry.

New ships are usually kept a secret until they absolutely have to announce – and this time they’re really waiting until the last minute to announce.

As soon as I know more – I’ll let you know.

One thing I do know is that if there is another Southampton preview cruise – I’ll have to do another CCUK members event!!

Tarar for now.

  • The Capn.

Where is the Edge?

For a company notorious for keeping things secret, Celebrity cruises still haven’t given us anymore details about their new “edge” ships.

What do we know so far…….

Parent company (Royal Caribbean international) announced in December 2014 that they’ve signed a letter of intent to build two new ships with a Nickname of “project edge”

These new ships will be smaller than Solstice class but larger than Millennium class.

With a specification of

2,900 guests, and a 117,000 gross registered tons – gives her a Guest / space ratio of 40.34 tons per guest (Solstice class is 42.8per guest)

(For anyone that doesn’t know, a ships “tonage” is not the weight, it a measurement of space onboard) anyway….

These new ships are expected delivery of autumn 2018 & 2020

  • So Celebrity best start announcing the details because they’re already selling cruises for April 2018 therefore we’re realistically looking 6months until Autumn 2018 goes on sale.

The Rumour mill is spinning. Of course with no official announcement – this is all speculation.

Edge will replace the Eclipse sailings out of Southampton.

Some of my customers have been told that the Eclipse’s time in Southampton is numbered – with a High booking port, the only explanation would be that they’re putting in their new hardware.

Celebrity’s only statement so far.

“We will bring our guests closer to the destination than ever before.”

  • This sounds like they’re bigging up the ships dimensions as a feature of getting into small ports. (the ship is 20 something foot shorter than Solstice class)

So what would you like to see on the project edge ships?

What do Celebrity need to get improve and what do they need to change?

Let me know in the comments, and I’ll see what the people want.
