Norwegian Jade returns out of dry dock.

Norwegian Cruise Line ship Norwegian Jade emerged from a refit in dry dock ahead of the line’s first full summer of sailings from the UK. I recently went on board during her visit to Newcastle and was impressed by what I saw.

The 2,466-passenger vessel was revamped over a three-week period with two new restaurants, two new bars and lounges, updated design and decor in many public spaces and a refurbishment of all cabins.

The ship completes its winter season of sailings from Tampa in Florida to the Caribbean on April 30 and will then reposition across the Atlantic for its dual summer homeports of Southampton and Hamburg.

The new-look Norwegian Jade will run itineraries to the Norwegian fjords as well as Norway and the North Cape throughout the summer.

NCL Europe, Middle East and Africa managing director, Christian Boell, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Norwegian Jade back to Europe this summer with her upgraded look.

“It is our sincere goal to deliver a fantastic vacation experience across our entire fleet, and this has come in time for Jade’s arrival in Europe, where she will be sailing directly from Southampton.

“With five ships in Europe this summer, we are so excited for passengers to experience the newly renovated Jade on European waters.”

The ship now offers 24-hour free pub grub at O’Sheehan’s and complimentary poolside fare (think burgers and fries) at Pit Stop, a 1950s-style diner where classic car accents and vintage license plates serve as decor.

Both restaurants are new to the ship, which has undergone renovations as part of Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Edge program, which aims to make the cruise experience more uniform across all ships, regardless of size or age.

Additionally, Moderno Churrascaria was relocated and now offers sea views; more seating was added to Cagney’s Steakhouse, which now boasts a virtual fireplace; La Cucina, the ship’s Italian restaurant, was spruced up and now features a wine wall; and Japanese hibachi venue Teppanyaki received a facelift, along with Jasmine Garden and Garden Cafe.

Other changes to public spaces include upgrades to the pool areas, the Sugarcane mojito bar and the Spinnaker Lounge; new Techno Gym equipment in the fitness centre; and the addition of Bliss Ultra Lounge, a nightclub with a Miami vibe. In the atrium, a new custom-designed chandelier hangs overhead.

All cabins on board were outfitted with new carpet, furniture, flat-screen TVs and headboards with USB charging outlets. Villas, suites and cabins in The Haven, Norwegian’s “ship within a ship” concept, have new finishes on walls and ceilings, as well as new draperies and flooring. The Haven also features four new cabanas. In all, the ship’s staterooms display more than 2,250 pieces of upgraded artwork.

For the next month, Norwegian Jade will offer its regular winter season itineraries to the Western Caribbean from Tampa. On April 30, the ship will relocate to Europe via a transatlantic voyage, spending its summer sailing to Norway from Southampton and Hamburg.

Norwegian Cruise Lines from May 2017 will now be offering passengers the chance to sail from Miami to Cuba on a 4 night sailing which departs every Monday and will be available from May 2017 through until December 2017. Since Cuba has opened up and started allowing cruise ships to dock into Cuba the demand for these itineraries has soared. Norwegian Cruise Lines had originally only planned 5 itineraries from Miami but now have added a further 25 to make the total of 30 sailings.

Norwegian Sky will be the ship that’s deployed on these sailings, Norwegian Sky is an alcohol inclusive ship (so 99%of the drinks are complimentary) the ship will have an overnight stay in Havana, Cuba and also dock into Norwegian Cruise Lines very own private island – Great Stirrup Cay.

Cuba is an Island located in the northern Caribbean sea where the sea meets the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Cuba is the largest Island in the Caribbean and inhabits over 11 million people, Cuba is located south of the United States and Florida, west of Haiti and north of Jamaica. The local language spoken is Spanish.

Cuba enjoys a year round tropical climate rarely falling below 21 degrees and can see highs of 35 degrees, Cuba has two seasons, dry and wet. The dry season starts from December and finishes in May – between this time you can expect long days of hot sunshine and very low rainfall. The wet season lasts from May to October where rain will be more frequent but done let that put you off as once the rain has stopped the sun will be back out again for you to top up that tan.

She will weigh in at 167,600 tonnes and carry an impressive 5,700 passengers.

Its hard to believe that Norwegian Cruise Lines turns 50 years old this year, I personally thought they were around longer. They started with their first ship the M/S Sunward in 1966 and offered cruises from the port of Miami to the Caribbean named Norwegian Caribbean Cruise Lines then renamed Norwegian Cruise Lines in 1987. In 1996 Norwegian Cruise Lines becomes an independent corporation known as Norwegian Cruise Lines Limited.

In February of 2000 Norwegian Cruises Lines is bought by Star Cruises and becomes the third largest cruise line with over 18 ships with in the fleet. Even they are now 100% owned by Star Cruises they still retain the brand name of Norwegian Cruise Lines, they also become the first cruise line to operate the freestyle dining policy which was launched in May of that year aboard the Norwegian Sky.

To continue with the Freestyle cruise style Norwegian Cruise Lines introduces two new ships in 2001 and expands the fleet by adding the Norwegian Sun (September) and the Norwegian Star (November).

In 2002 Norwegian Cruise Lines introduces the Norwegian Dawn (December) the third ship to feature freestyle family.

In 2004 Norwegian Sky is renamed Pride of Aloha and starts sailings from Hawaii, the first time a cruise has done this in over 50 years. In 2006 Norwegian Sky is then joined by the new Pride of Hawaii island hopping to and from Honolulu.

In 2009 Norwegian Cruise Lines wins the World Travel Award as Europe’s leading cruise line for the second year running (a great achievement).

In 2010 Norwegian Cruise Lines announces the redevelopment  and enhancement to its private Island Great Stirrup Cay, the Island is located 120 miles east of Fort Lauderdale and costs a staggering 20 million US Dollars with renovation due to be complete by end of 2011.

In 2011 Norwegian Cruise Lines introduces the Norwegian Epic, the biggest cruise ship they have entered into service. The Norwegian Epic carries 4100 passengers and weighs in at 155,873 tonnes and has an incredible 19 decks.

Throughout the years Norwegian Cruise Lines deploys more ships in the Mediterranean to accommodate the ever expanding cruise market.

In 2013 the cruise line takes delivery of their brand new ship the Norwegian Breakaway and in 2014 takes delivery of their second Breakaway-class ship the Norwegian Getaway.

In 2015 the cruise line announce that the Norwegian Epic will sail year round from Barcelona. In October of the same year the newest ship and biggest to their fleet the Norwegian Escaped debuted.

The cruise line continues to strive and receive awards throughout the travel industry!

Its nearly time for the launch of the newest ship to join the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet; The Norwegian Escape.

She will be the largest cruise ship to be home-ported in Miami, offering 7-night Caribbean sailings. The cruise line have announced that International Music Superstar ‘Pitbull’ will be godfather to the vessel. Also, from Miami. The cruise line believe that choosing Pitbull as the godfather will show passengers how they operate as a non-traditional, freestyle cruise line that focuses mainly on the flexibility for passengers on board.

What are you thoughts on daily gratuities charged by each cruise line? After reading my blog can you please provide me with some feedback so we can pass your views onto the cruise lines.

My personal thoughts on this swings a few different ways, if the cruise have a mandatory charge then they have to be prepaid, this is set out before you make a booking so you are aware of this, then you have no worries about paying them at the end of the cruise.

If they are optional then you have a few different ways of paying them, either pre paying them before departure, letting the cruise ship add them on at a daily basis or completely opting out and advising guest relations to remove the charge which gives you the option to tip who you like.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Holland America allow you to do all three of the above.

Some cruise lines include them in the price of the cruise, this I feel to be the best option, no hassle of having to pay them at the end of the cruise , cruise lines such as Azamara, Thomson, Seabourn, Silver sea & Crystal Cruises.

Costa Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines have compulsory gratuities, Costa’s have been around for a number of years, Norwegian Cruise Lines have only just introduced them as compulsory, this has come as a shock to some of the past passengers as they have increased them to £8.50 per person per day if prepaid in sterling or $13.50 a day if paid on the cruise ship.

Princess Cruises is another cruise who have just upped there daily charge from $11.50 to $12.95 a day also following suit is Holland America who have upped theres from $11.50 to $12.50 a day and if you book a suite they increase to £13.50 a day.

I believe that all cruise lines should adopt the same policy which will make it easier for every to get their heads around.
