Carried on from my previous blog regarding P&O’s ships, P&O also do family cruising very well too, and here is the advantage of having specialised ships for different categories

Beginning with the smallest is the Aurora catering for 1874 guests, this elegant ship has a tiered stern, long bow and sleek funnel. This was my first P&O cruise and I was not disappointed in this world class ship. Her main feature is a stunning 4 deck atrium, perfect for formal evenings and featuring a dramatic 35ft scuplture.

FamileyFriendlyOverciewImage318x318

Aurora also sails the world during the Winter world cruise and Europe and Scandinavia in Summer season for varying lengths between 3 and 25 nights

A family favourite is the Oceana, a mid sized ship carrying 2016 passengers. For the last 2 years she has been based in the Med as a fly cruise with alternate 7 and 14 night itineraries sailing around the West and East Mediterranean, giving people the opportunity to visit ports that are just that little out of reach on a Southampton sailing. This has proved very popular with P&O passengers and was a gamble worth taking, especially as they offer direct regional charter flights from many airports in the UK.

OceanaAtrium318x318

One of the first family ships to have a more informal atmosphere, Oceana’s redeeming features are a bustling atrium with palm trees and glass fronted lifts giving it a very airy vibe, and a secret sports court in her funnel is a constant surprise for all

Ventura is the most popular ship for families with lots of features. This was a huge step forward for P&O building a ship so big carrying 3078 people, and was launched to rival Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas.

AzuraOverview318x318

Ventura has everything, shes a very sociable ship where there is always something going on, whether its kids playing in The Reef, adults relaxing in the Spa, 4 pools and a sports court and a 2 deck theatre for evening shows

Azura followed 2 years later and from the popularity of her sister ship Ventura P&O went bigger and better, she is one of the largest ships in P&O’s fleet. Described as a social paradise at sea this ships is great for all ages. she blends pure sophistication with a family friendly vibe and is a favourite with my passengers. Sailing from Barbados for some Winter sunshine and Europe and the Med in Summer

BritanniaOverviewStatsImage318x318

2015 saw the launch of Britannia, P&O’s new flagship, it’s moto……’Inspired by our past designed for the future’. This description perfectly describes the new innovations that P&O introduced on this new modern ship with a very different look to previous ships, even being voted best new ocean ship in 2015 and is the largest ship built exclusively for the UK market. From those first steps onboard be mesmorised by the spectacular ‘starburst’ centrepiece of her atrium, relax in the Retreat, have a cookery lesson with a host of famous chefs, watch a west end style show or The Beatles experience in the Live lounge, there is so much to do you will struggle to disembark at your chosen ports

Serenity_Pool_DS38789_

And now for the exciting news, 2020 sees the launch of P&O’s next ship, promised to take cruising to a whole new generation, details are kept a secret so we can only wait in anticipation for news to filter through, but they have promised to take your holiday to new heights with a host of new innovative features to make you go wow.

I for one am excited, this will surely be a best seller

Keith Duffy quoted, “We are very excited to be taking our sell-out tour to sea and entertaining Britannia’s guests with music and stories from life on the road with our respective bands. After 20 years on the road, we’ve grown up and it’s great to be able to look back, reminisce and give our fans the inside track story of how we felt at the time”

“I am especially delighted to be back on Britannia after filming Battlechefs last year, but this time I will be swapping my chef’s hat for a microphone.”

The senior Vice President for P&O Cruises stated; “At P&O Cruises we are constantly looking at new ways in which we can enhance the experience of our guests. Our guests already enjoy world-class entertainment on board all our ships but I believe they will be especially excited to see such a high profile act as Boyzlife in the intimate setting of Britannia’s Limelight Club.”

Exciting news for Scotland and for myself. I read today that Scotland is predicted to be a new upcoming destination for 2017 with the cruise industry predicting a bumper season for Scottish ports, I for one was interested in reading this article as I am sailing around the Scottish Islands next Summer.

Boudicca_in_the_Sound_of_Mull_original

With more and more people cruising, many are getting bored of the typical Mediterranean destinations and more are looking for something different and new adventures.  In the last few years British Isles itineraries are becoming more popular with people wanting to see more of their home country, and the trend for no fly cruises is escalating. Many cruise lines now have at least 1 if not more itineraries around the UK calling at ports in England, Scotland and Ireland.

Cruise Scotland have advised that the cruise industry in Scotland has grown in 2016 by 5.3% and for 2017 a growth of 19.5% in comparison to this year. Amazingly a total of 808 ships have been booked to call in at a Scottish port in 2017 with over 650,000 passengers, bringing in £72.5 to the local economy. This was really surprising to me as you don’t quite realise how many options there are

When you look at the itineraries there are indeed many ports to visit and each bringing something different to the customer. There are the main cities of Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen (Invergordon) and Glasgow (Greenock). Then the islands of Shetland, Orkney, Skye, and the Outer and Inner Hebrides. Kirkwell in Orkney is the most visited port around the UK.

D1618_map_Web_original

When you look in more detail there really is so much to see up here and why not pay a visit? The large cities feature many beautiful architectural buildings, art galleries and points of history and interest. The Islands are beautiful and the scenery unbelievable. I remember seeing a beach that was in the top 10 beaches in the UK and a fair few were in the very North of Scotland, if you could guarantee the weather it would be heaven. Nature and wildlife also plays a large part for both land and sea. There are a number of birds to spot some even endangered, plus if your lucky, puffins, whales and dolphins

The main cruise lines sailing here are Fred Olsen and Cruise & Maritime which feature a number of itineraries, however Princess, P&O, Celebrity and Oceania also have a few sailings during the Summer.

If you would like information on any of these itineraries please don’t hesitate to call me on 0161 78 2516 or emailed marcia@cruiseclubuk.com

The results are in for the 2016 UK Editors’ Picks Awards.

I think the most surprising result has to be the best new cruise ship of 2016, announced as the TIU Discovery from Thomson Cruise Lines. Purely because the ship doesn’t have all the singing and dancing features of some of the other new additions introduced this year. Previously the Royal Caribbean Splendour of the Seas, the TUI Discovery is the first for a UK cruise line to offer passengers a rock climbing wall, outdoor cinema and virtual band. Specifically tailored to the UK market, she has proved to be a winner!

Thomson Cruises
TUI Discovery

Another UK cruise line picked up an award as the Best Cruise Line for dining, P&O Cruise Lines.

Royal Caribbean took the most awards for: Best Cruise Line for Entertainment, Best Cruise Line Suites and Best Cruise Line for Families.

Sister company to Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruise Lines took the award for Best Cruise Line Shore Excursions and Best Cruise Line Cabins.

Best Cruise Line Itineraries award went to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines who sail from more UK ports than any other cruise line. They offer many different types of sailings. from a five night Norwegian fjord cruise out of Newcastle, to a 107 night voyage from Southampton to Sydney. They have fly-cruises to unique places like the Amazon and Africa.

Sunset on a river in the Amazon
Sunset on a river in the Amazon

Cunard took the Best Cruise Ship Refurbishment for their “re-mastering” of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship. Fifteen new single cabins were just one of the new features introduced to the cruise line.

If its Romance your after, then look at Princess Cruise lines as they scooped the Best Cruise Line for Romance award.

Of course, it had to be the one and only Hurtigruten line which took Best Cruise Line for Adventure. They offer trips like no other. whether it is husky sledding, quad biking, glacier calving, snorkelling in antartica or a hike to the hills of Greenland, they have something to offer for everyone.

Best Cruise Line for Nightlife award is given to Norwegian Cruise Line – which isn’t surprising as they have around 20 bars and lounges on each of their ships.

Liverpool got the Best UK Port of Call award and Southampton got the Best UK Departure Port award.
