Barcelona, Spain is the capital of Spain’s Catalonia area, and is considered to be one of Spain’s, or even Europe’s, most cosmopolitan and beautiful cities. Examples of this, is the incredible architecture, where the modern art, combines with the dark, yet equally beautiful gothic era, with Barcelona’s very own architect, Antoni Gaudi, examples of his works are infused within the city, one of the most famous of his works, the Sagrada Familia, is an absolute must see, for any visitor. Barcelona boasts a vibrant and beautiful old town, which is the heart of this cosmopolitan city. This area is home to many museums, cafes and bars, teamed with boutiques and shops. The famous Las Ramblas, runs through the heart of Barcelona, and is fringed with shops, restaurants, bars and is also home to the beautiful, historic opera house. Barcelona has many side streets, and historic squares that offer the chance to experience true Spanish tapas, washed down with a famous Spanish drink, sangria. Barcelona, is a major departure port for many cruise lines, and is quite often featured on many itineraries, with many passengers choosing to extend their holiday, by adding on a hotel stay, either before or after their cruise

The Western Mediterranean as a cruising region, offers a spectrum of culture and arts, combined with beautiful beaches and a laid back atmosphere. Itineraries offered within this region include ports of call within, Spain, Italy and France, and sometimes include stops in Lisbon for Portugal, the Canary Islands, and Casablanca and Tangier for Morocco, and Gibralter

It was once considered best to visit the Western Mediterranean region during spring and the summer months, however cruise lines such as MSC and Costa are beginning to offer all year round itineraries within this area, with Barcelona and Marseilles (France),  still being included on the itinerary, they are now sailing further southwards towards Morocco and into the Canaries.

Some of the larger ships usually visit the bigger ports, including destinations, such as Barcelona, Rome and Florence. The vast majority of cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Line, tend to offer itineraries either starting in these ports, or featuring them on their itineraries

Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises are based from Italy, and can offer shorter cruise itineraries at much lower prices. For a more British feel, P&O Cruises and Cunard offer a variety of sailings, whilst the luxury cruise lines such as Azamara, Crystal, Silversea, Seabourn, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas offer itineraries to smaller ports of call such as Cannes, Capri and Portofino and often spend much longer in port.

Following my recent ship visit in Liverpool on board Caribbean Princess I was impressed by the ease of arrival to the cruise terminal, the warm welcome by the terminal staff and the overall ease of boarding the ship

DSC_0077
Caribbean Princess at Liverpool Cruise Terminal

The majority of ships departing from the UK , usually sail from Southampton, which for guests in the North of England can entail either a flight from a northern airport, therefore restricting baggage allowance, and can be a nightmare in itself, with checking in and security. Another option is the gruelling four to five hour journey by either coach, or self driving to the port and parking for the duration of the cruise holiday.

Our drive from Manchester to Liverpool was relatively smooth, and I was surprised that it had taken around an hour and half, and this included the morning traffic and the 50mph speed restrictions on the M60 Motorway

The approach in itself was pleasant, with the view of landmarks such as the Liver Building, the iconic grand building which overlooks the River Mersey and was once hailed as the tallest building in Europe when built in 1911, and today is Grade 1 listed

On arrival to the port, car parking was easily accessible in the multi story car park directly opposite the terminal, with the cruise ship in full view and took less than 5 minutes to walk to the terminal.

Situated in a central location in the Irish Sea, Liverpool Cruise Terminal has become one of the most popular cruise destinations within Europe boasting a vast richness in maritime heritage and was the departure port for the first passenger cruise line and since opening the cruise terminal in 2007, many cruise ships and ocean liners have berthed there.

Liverpool Cruise Terminal invites international cruise passengers and has become a favourite with guests over the years and has been voted ‘Best UK Port of Call’ no less than three times within the last four years by Cruise Critic, and was voted ‘Destination of the Year’ in 2015, by Seatrade

On accessing the terminal we were greeted with the Liverpool Ukulele Orchestra, a group of smiley and friendly locals playing various hits from Liverpool’s very own Beatles. The atmosphere was joyful, and for the international guests arriving into the port of Liverpool for the first time, created a fantastic first impression.

Liverpool Ukulele Orchestra

I was surprised at the range of excursions this vibrant city had to offer cruise guests, so I have listed some top picks below, that Princess Cruises offer in, and around Liverpool.

The Beatles – A short drive to visit John Lennon’s home he lived in as a boy, and Paul McCartney’s boyhood home, with a guided tour of each home. A narrated drive through Liverpool, and stops for photos at Penny Lane and Strawberry Field. Guests can take a walk down Mathew Street, to the site of the Old Cavern Club where the Beatles performed over 300 times from February 1961 to August 1963.  A trip to The Beatles Story, located on the Albert Docks, showcases exhibits that chronicles the ‘Fab Four’ from their days spent in Hamburg, to their final break – up.

Liverpool City Highlights – A half – day narrated drive around the city of Liverpool allows guests to experience the sights and sounds of Liverpool, passing the Royal Liver Building with its towers topped by the Liver Birds, and a drive past Pier Head, the Town Hall and Chinatown. The tour continues with a visit to Christ the King Cathedral, Liverpool’s Roman Catholic basilica, and the Anglican Cathedral, boasting the title of the largest cathedral in Britain. Along the way, photo stops are taken at the Walker Art Gallery and St. George’s Hall, which is considered one of the finest neo – classical buildings in Europe.

Best of the Lake District – A full day tour, includes travel by land, train and lake. A scenic two – hour drive to Lake Windermere in the Lake District, the largest lake in England. Guests then board the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway for a steam train tour of the Leven River Valley. Free time to explore Bowness, a pretty and charming village on the shore of Lake Windermere

Conwy Castle and Town – A full day tour exploring the beautiful countryside of North Wales, with a scenic drive along the North Wales coastline to Conwy Castle. Conwy Castle is dubbed as one of the most impressive castles in Wales and boasts three fortified gates and no fewer than eight towers

Cruise Lines departing from Liverpool include, Fred Olsen and Cruise and Maritime, to name a few!

Majestic Princess will be sailing out of Sydney from September 2018 to March 2019, giving you the chance to see epic landscapes, colourful cultures and the laid back charm this fascinating destination has to offer.

Whether it’s your first time visiting the land down under or you have been lucky enough to experience its many awe inspiring attractions, Australia remains as popular as ever within the UK market.

Most people book a few nights hotel stay before their cruise from Sydney, however did you know that Princess Cruises offer two Cruisetours? These can be added on pre or post cruise and are fantastic value with amazing experiences.

MJ_2017_0111_FS_SeaTrialAtSea_FIL0911

I recently visited Caribbean Princess in Liverpool for the day (as us Travel Agents do), the Princess reps advised us that Princess Cruises are fat feeders………. They weren’t wrong. From 11am to 3pm we enjoyed coffee and pastries, pizza, homemade lemonade then a 3 course meal! Their choice of dining is off the scale and there is something for everyone no matter what allergies, diet are.

Obviously you control what you eat when you’re away and on a cruise they do say you gain 1lb a day. With so many dining options onboard Princess Cruises I wanted to highlight your choices and recommend favourite dining venues from personal experience:

Included in the cost of your cruise:

24hour-international-cafe

The International Café – Located in one of the best areas, the Piazza. This place is 24 hours and serves daily soups, Paninis, salads, freshly baked cookies (a must), cakes and a variety of speciality coffees, teas and more. The perfect place to people watch, or if you’re an early riser or struggle sleeping this is the best place to be.

alfredos-pizza

Alfreso’s Pizzeria – made to order gourmet pizzas. The open kitchen means you can watch your personal pizza being created.

anytime-traditional-dining

Fine dining with two great dining choices on offer:

Anytime Dining – Dine anytime from 530pm to 10pm. Choose a table size for your party or join a group the next time. The choice is yours. I’d recommend to book this option at the time of booking as they only allocate so many passengers this dining choice. Perfect for those who like to plan their daily activities given you ample to freshen up ready for some fine food!

The other choice is traditional dining, set times of 630pm & 830pm, dine at the same table each evening with the same wait staff throughout your cruise, a great way to meet new people and share stories

horizon-court-buffett

Daytime dining is just as good up on open deck, choose from the burger & hotdog grill, a slice or two of freshly made pizza (American style size), soft serve chocolate or vanilla ice cream or the Horizon Court buffet which offers a casual setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Speciality Restaurants with Princess vary from ship to ship, from Share by Curtis Stone to Sabatini’s Italian.

crown grill

By far the most popular and a firm favourite is the Crown Grill – serving cooked to order steaks and premium seafood. A great atmosphere and you can enjoy drinks at the bar after dining. How about Ultimate balcony dining? Perfect for a luxurious breakfast or romantic dinner at sea.

If you still have room for more how about popcorn whilst watching a hit film poolside with Movies Under the Stars.

Whichever dining venue you choose with Princess Cruises you won’t be disappointed!

As Travel Agents we get to experience ship visits, giving us a great insight and first-hand knowledge on the cruise ships we sell

A few of us from Cruise Club UK joined the Caribbean Princess in Liverpool for the day, here’s our insight:

Newly renovated in March 2017, Caribbean Princess has had $8.2 million spent on her. Excited to see her makeover I couldn’t wait to discover her transformation.

The ship arrived late due to low fog, however I saw that as a benefit when we got to watch the smallest tug boat manoeuvre the huge Caribbean Princess into place. All checked in and given our visitor passes for the day we headed upto deck 7, aft – Club Fusion, this is a popular nightspot where live performances, karaoke and more take place.

atrium

A quick but in depth tour of the ship took us to the atrium for an exclusive performance from the ships entertainment staff. Princess pride themselves in the social hub of the atrium, with everything you could want all in one place. Plus if you’re like me who loves to people watch it’s the perfect place. International café – amazing peanut butter cookies and coffees to go plus much more – and its 24 hours – and no extra charge. Vines bar is a popular haunt with lots of wines on offer plus sushi freshly made.

caribbean
Vines Bar

A behind the scenes tour of the galley (kitchens) gave us a great insight into how the chefs operate and prepare for the days ahead.

We were able to view an obstructed ocean view cabin, really good size plus all cabins now feature the Princess luxury bed.

The Lotus Spa area is a really good size and flows really well. Starting with the hair salon, nails and teeth whitening. This then takes you to the new gym area with panoramic views to sea. Plenty of treatment rooms on offer too. The Sanctuary is an exclusive area for adults only, with pool area and large sun loungers which I found impressive.

hjhgj

Now to everyone’s favourite – food:

Located next to Neptune’s Reef & Pool is Slice Pizzeria – delightful large slice of Pepperoni pizza went down well with a fresh glass of lemonade (ship visits are hard work after all). Also on this deck and can’t go without a mention is the Salty Dog Grill, it’s ‘Ernesto Burger’ has won awards for the best at sea! Also around the pool area and the perfect location is Coffee & Cones, again complimentary. The World Fresh Market Place is newly designed and as I walked through I just wanted to grab the delicious sandwiches and everything else on offer!

fddfg                       prin

A good old favourite is the Crown Grill, which is one of my favourite speciality dining venues. New to the ship is Planks BBQ and Steamers Seafood which are located opposite each other. Both very modern and clean and comes with a cover charge $$$$

Last stop of the day before a delightful 3 course meal was Skywalkers Nightclub. Situated aft on deck 15 with lovely panoramic views out to sea.

I was very impressed with Caribbean Princess, especially by the friendly staff and food options on offer. I would definitely look into booking my own itinerary onboard Caribbean Princess
