A number of Travel Agents were treated to a VIP visit on board Cunard Lines Queen Elizabeth in Liverpool on Saturday 2nd July 2016

It was a special celebration to mark the 100th Birthday of the Cunard Building in Liverpool

Stunning! I expected elegance and the Queen Elizabeth did not disappoint, here’s my experience:

Arriving into the triple height Grand Lobby (my Titanic moment) was absolutely stunning, with the sweeping staircase and the huge portrait of the original RMS Queen Elizabeth. A beautiful flower arrangement on display in the centre of the lobby and the grand piano. It felt like I’d walked into a timeless era.

So whilst passengers were off enjoying all that Liverpool has to offer, we had a guided tour of the ship. Due to her itinerary the ship was full, therefore we didn’t get chance to view any passenger cabins.

The dining venues on board are every bit as you would expect – white star service

The Queens Grill has a lovely outside courtyard

The Verandah Restaurant – This was my favourite – The décor was contemporary French, very white and clean. Reservations must be made to dine here, a cover charge of approx. $35 per person plus wines

Verandah Restaurant

We dined in the Britannia Restaurant – dramatic double height room – reflects the golden age of travel. A three course meal with wines and iced water was served by very attentive staff. I opted for:

Asparagus and Chervil Veloute with Feta Cheese Croutons

Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Caramelised Shallot and Thyme Taret Tatin, Bacon, Mushrooms, Pomme Anna Potatoes

Millionaires Salted Caramel and Chocolate Truffle Cake with Dark Chocolate Sauce

Onto the outside area: The pool was of a decant size with comfortable looking sun-loungers. The sports deck surprised me, with lots on offer. From giant chess to tennis and boules.

As if the day couldn’t get any better we disembarked and headed over to the Cunard Building for a 230pm concert… the Scottish Royal Marines Band marched to formation and played a few songs. A choir sang patriotic songs as the crowd waved their flags. Nessun Dorma (one of my favourite songs) was sang by a local opera singer. Confetti cannons were set off into the crowd!

The final Concert was at 9pm (I had ventured home by then) followed by fireworks as the Queen Elizabeth sailed out of port

My honest opinion:

I don’t do formal dress code, I’m all about the casual look whilst sipping a fine cocktail. I surprised myself on this ship visit. Why? Because I would not hesitate to sail on any Cunard Ship. When I walked into the library (two storeys, the largest at sea) I could see myself sitting in here for those chilled days at sea, reading a book and drinking coffee. As a regular theatre goer I would rate the Royal Court Theatre on board better than you average West Ender! Spacious, opulent and it gave me the wow factor when I walked in. If I got to dine in the Verandah Restaurant for just one evening of my cruise I would happily dress formal for the occasion

What a fabulous experience and a true moment in history to treasure for years to come! Thank you Cunard
