Our recent best selling offer on MSC Fantasia got me thinking about holiday destinations in the Caribbean and leading to me booking my own cruise, (but that’s another story). What really grabbed my attention was the interest created because the Fantasia began in Barbados rather than the American ports of Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

It got me thinking about this island as its one of the most famous islands of the Caribbean and yet I knew little apart from that this is where Rihanna is from, and that it has some of the best beaches in the world and as a sun queen myself (when I’m not freezing in the Arctic circle) I decided I must go, this little island was on my new hit list of travel destinations and now I am actually going to see for myself what a wonderful island this truly is, unfortunately I have to wait 9 months

It seems there are 2 sides to Barbados, the Capital Bridgetown old and Colonial steeped in history, and the beach resorts with sprawling sands, hotel complex’s where people go to relax.

I guess holidaying there will be very different to stopping off for a day so as a cruiser I’d be interested in a quick tour of the island, followed by a cocktail and sun lounger on these very beaches that I hear so much about

Barbados is an eastern Caribbean island and became and independent state in 1966 . The main attractions of the island are of course its beaches, but there are also botanical gardens, the Harrison’s Cave formation, and 17th-century plantation houses like St. Nicholas Abbey, and it seems there are still many British influences, locals drive on the same side, and afternoon tea seems to be very popular, perhaps this is why it is so welcoming to us Brits.

Interestingly enough Bridgetown got its name from the bridge that was constructed in the area by the original Amerindian settlers. The island was settled by the English in the 17th century and early deeds refer to the area as The Indian Bridge and The Indian Bridgetown.
